How can you have a stable relationship with mental illness on the part of both partners?

I have seen many hetero couples that lived together for a long time and got married. I can’t remember one that lasted more than a few years. I think once the marriage took place then expectations changed for one or both. That undermined the relationship until love turned to loathing.
