Gun Locks Are A Problem … Even For Monk
Big Hollywood ^ | January 10, 2009 | John R. Lott, Jr.

Well, even though Adrian Monk couldn’t get the gun out of the gun safe at least the safe itself could be used as a weapon. This is one of the very few TV shows that have made fun of gun locks. Monk’s line, “Don’t move there is a gun in here.” is classic. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that, unlike most of the biased media coverage on guns, this humor gets across the research that gun locks actually make it significantly more difficult for people to defend themselves against criminals. . . .

Interesting comments at the end of the article. Looks like “Monk” is worth a look.

The first comment about the police lieutenant teaching a concealed carry course was surprising. It does make sense in that if you have to take the time to take the safety off and put one in the chamber then it might be too late. Do police do that?

I hope police would not have the safety on and nothing in the chamber. How they carry is probably decided by individual departments though.

Also in the comments section, I liked “An unloaded weapon is an expensive rock.”

That’s just a variation on the classic “If yer gun ain’t loaded...might as well just carry a rock.”

Other fav. “There is no such thing as too much ammo.”

There’s a hundred of those great sayings...who’s got more?

Do police do that?

Depends on where you're talking about. Israel was famous for insisting that one carry one's sidearm with an empty chamber.

Here in America, we carry a round in the chamber, and with the safety on or off as dictated by department policy, personal choice, and weapon design. (IE, a 1911 format pistol would be carried with the safety on, but SA/DA pistol makes more sense decocked, safety off.)

Gun locks for a self-defense weapon = dumb. I got one each for a few weapons when I bought them. They are not being used. And I have young kids around.

My self-defense weapons are in a quick-access safe, ready to fire.

Luckily locks are not required here. But you are liable for a misdemeanor if your kids get ahold of one of your guns and do something illegal. Fair enough.

Love the show, hate Tony Shalhoub’s ( Monk ) politics. Liberal BDSer all the way.

I don't have anything specific but sometimes the show has me scratching my head. Before his wife's death, Monk was supposed to be a great police officer. Now some ways he handles things make him look like a total boob, making mistakes a rookie wouldn't even make. I know it's supposed to be all blamed on his heightened OCD but still I wonder.
