WHAT IS BGAN? The Broadband Global Area Network or BGAN for short, is a global Satellite Internet Network with telephony using portable terminals. The terminals are normally used to connect laptop computers to broadband Internet in remote locations the terminal can be used anywhere. The value of BGAN terminals is that unlike other satellite Internet services which require bulky & heavy satellite dishes to connect, a BGAN terminal is smaller than a laptop and thus can be carried anywhere, and used globally. The network is provided by INMARSAT and uses two geostationary satellites, with a third satellite to enter service on February 24th, 2009. With the third satellite, the service will cover all parts of the globe except for the polar regions.
The hardware Operation AC has chosen is made by HUGHES, long-standing innovative US Company in the defense industry. This unit offers the highest bandwidth in the BGAN range, the ruggedized HNS 9201 is ideal for small teams or individuals with high data requirements, such as the broadcast media. It weighs 4.85lbs and is smaller than an average laptop computer. Over a standard IP connection, it connects at up to 492kbps, while guaranteed data rates range from 32kbps to 256kbps for both send and receive. The HNS 9201 is the only terminal in the range to feature both a dedicated 64kbps ISDN data channel and connection via WiFi, in addition to USB and Ethernet. Voice is delivered via an ISDN handset. 11 Soldiers can connect simultaneously and be able to speak, IM or email their families. If they have a webcam they can even see and hear their family for short periods of time.
When I was in the Army, I would stand with anticipation hoping for a letter from home during mail call. I think our Troops would love to be able to use something like this.
God bless our Troops and God bless those who stand with them.
