Why is Obama on Arab TV instead of in KY? I would rather he stay out of Kentucky. I managed to survive just fine without his help or the help of anyone else. Could it be because I figured out long ago that we have to be self reliant?

In NH in Dec. we went and cleared the roads ourselves. If we had to wait for the tree crews it would have been over a week in some locations. We're doing that. We just can't keep up with the amount of downed timber. To put things in perspective for people, it literally looks like a 100 mile wide tornado went through our state.

I'm glad to hear that y'all are in pretty good shape now.
What will it take to get your power back--who will have to do the work--the local power companies? Now that the roads are clear, do you think that they can repair the lines soon?
The photos I saw from KY were absolutely horrendous.

Has there been any looting ?
We're pretty well armed around here, and we haven't had any ridiculous firearms confiscation like they had in NOLA. There hasn't been any appreciable change in crime in my area. The worst it's been is some people arguing over cutting in line at the gas stations. That's about it.

All joking aside, we need to figure out whether Obama has declared the area a disaster, etc., what kind of assistance he has set in forth more than a WEEK after this ice storm hit.
We know he has done no flyover (I’m pretty sure) and hasn’t even bothered mentioning this disaster in his radio addresses so far.
Am I mistaken in believing the GOVERNOR of a state is the one with the authority to call in the National Guard? If I remember correctly, Louisiana Gov. Blanco didn’t call in the LA Natl. Guard soon enough, then the blame fell on Bush for her failure.
I remember something about Bush pleading with Blanco to do so. I’m looking for the timeline of Katrina (not biased news reports) but actual events.
This could be a big problem for the Obama administration if we can get the FACTS, and demand the media report them.

What bothers me about this whole mess is the news people were outraged about the poor man who froze to death in his home because the city turned off his power. Which, yes,is a tragedy that should not have happened. Yet thousands of people in KY are without power in freezing temperatures and it is crickets chirping. Where is the outrage? Where is the president? Just disgusting

where can we find pics of the devastation?

Don’t forget he told people no longer will we be able to keep our heat on 68-72 but he keeps his offices at the white house warm as toast. I think he has told us that these are dire and stressful times and it will last for a while. Wink wink,he will need 8 years to fix the problems. All these politicians are crooked and hypocrites!!! Look at all the tax payer money has been spent on all the parties just in the last few weeks. And now they all want new cars, stimulus my butt. We have a very old car and would love to have a new one. Second time husbands lost his job in three years, who can afford a new car. Besides other things have more importance to every day living.Food, medicine, housing, gas for the old car. Obama is not about change,he’s about the same old politician double speak known as bull shi*!!!!!

Think about this, you have thousands of miles of secondary country roads serving all the rural areas. Probably 75% of the poles and 95% of the lines need replacing. That's going to be a long, drawn out job. Thankfully, our local power companies have been receing help form crews from SC, TN and MI (that's just the one's I've seen).
The major cities (towns over 1000 people) are coming back on line pretty quickly. It's all the folks in those rural areas who are hurting. If everybody has power within a month I'd be completely shocked.

What it will take is long a$$ed hours put in by line workers. Most of the power companies around here have contracted extra help from out of state, and most crews are working 16 hour days. Power is mostly restored along main roadways in the towns and cities. In rural areas, customers near main roads will likely get power back within the next 2 weeks. It could be until the first week of March before it's completely restored in some areas, however. There are places where the ice and falling trees was so bad that it completely destroyed the power grid to the point that they're getting rid of everything there and rebuilding from scratch.
I expect my duplex to without power for the rest of the week at a minimum. My grandmother, who I'm staying with and looking after, has power in her neighborhood, but she doesn't have it yet because the power company hasn't reconnected the wires to her house. We've been waiting a couple of days for someone to get out there and do it. I hope they do soon, because she's starting to take a cold of some kind. I am too, for that matter, but I'll live. She's a 78 year old woman on the other hand, and she doesn't need to be getting sick. My dad is out of town at the moment, but we've got keys to his house. There wasn't power there either as of this weekend, but I'm hoping they'll have it on in his neighborhood soon so I can move her somewhere with normal heat as opposed to a kerosene heater.
Yeah, I took some pictures for posterity. My town looks like a full wing of B-52s carpet bombed it.

I was without power for a week when Ike hit the Midwest and lost power again last week for about 6 hours during the ice storm. I own a generator and kerosene heater and keep them both in good working order.
God bless those in Kentucky who are suffering through the cold.

Very true especially considering many of these power companies are electric cooperatives.

where can we find pics of the devastation? That's the weird thing. Other than the Nashville news (Nashville is only about 50 miles from where the storm damage begins), there has been very little documentation of this storm. Having said that, you can go to this Kentucky Hunting site and see pics posted by average joes like myself. Most of the pics look like they're from North-Central KY. The areas which were completely devasted were towns like Paducah and Madisonville. I don't think those people have power or internet yet. We should be getting pics from them when they get back online.

After a week without power back in Dec. in NH, we had one guy that finally snapped and went after a powerline crew.
They arrested him for assault. I actually felt sorry for the guy. He looked like he needed a long shower and a good nights sleep.
