What I was getting at is a theme many conservative pundits are more often touching on, i.e., are we losing the 'cultural battle' to liberals?
Are those tactics that proved successful in the 80s germane today? What will work for us now?

You can read thru this thread and see how so much is being taken out of context and thoroughly distorted. Then there are the 'line-in-the-sand' factions who threaten to just leave if this 'awful Steele' isn't abdicated by midnight. And all this is amongst conservatives! We've yet to even present our case to 'Republicans' and sensible Democrats. (This last statement should get me labeled a 'liberal' for even thinking such a person exist! LOL)

I've not the answers, I don't pretend that I do. But, I have seen one person who genuinely rallied this Party like no one since Reagan, and that is Sarah Palin. Even she gets maligned and beat up for daring to state that she'd 'work' with the Obama admin. As if she, as an incumbent state governor, is just supposed to flip her middle finger at him and hide away in Anchorage for four years.
Now, Steele merely mentions the RNC should reach out to others of a different political stripe and some *ahem* solons here twist it to mean he's nothing more than a taller, and better dressed, Barney Frank.
Mr. Steele's job is not an easy one. He's a difficult road ahead of him.

“sensible Democrats”

Not sure they exist.

I am not giving up on Steele yet, he just started, I understand the game and what is said for broad appeal and what is said for true beleivers.
But I was hoping for something bold, it just sounds like more of the same, we have some very serious problems and little time to fix them by 2010. The RINO problem must be acknowledged by the uppper leadership, I know they cannot ruffle feathers much but at this point but we have got to hear something soon.

No, conservatives have been winning the cultural war in most all cases, BUT, the referees (or courts) constantly step in and declare the results unconstitutional and hand the win to the other side.

Every anti-gay marriage vote in about ten or twelve states has won, and by big margins except in California, where it still won.

This country is still more conservative than liberal, but we also have a good block of voters who decide based on general impressions of the candidates, and the general sense of "how things are going", or the traditional minority vote that goes to the Dems.

There have been recent surveys showing that the nation is still more than 50% conservative. And not that many young people voted, as usual, and how they vote at 20 will be very different for many of them ten or twenty years later.
