Paying for the S-CHIP will be up to smokers. Yes, a pack of cigarettes will be federally taxed $1.00. Small cigars $12.50 per 1,000 this year and $50 per 1,000 in 2015. Large cigars will be taxed .50 (8x the current tax). Roll your own is $24.00 more per 1 pound of tobacco. ROLL YOUR OWN!! The tubes for roll your own cigarettes will also be taxed substantially.

Tell me that the big tobacco boys aren't behind the $24.00 hike on a pound of tobacco for roll your own. Tell me the drug industry isn't behind it too. Go ahead, tell me. This is all payback.

At these high prices....people will slow down and quit smoking...some will steal cigarettes.

Then no revenue comes in....and then your income taxes get raised to fund the program

Glad I stopped smoking and am not a fattie! Once America is done with the smokers, it’ll move on to the fatties!

When are they going to start taxing the crackheads, meth heads and coke heads? Drug use causes our society far more damage and costs.

Oh..never mind..they are Obama and the dems constituency. It will never happen.

(eye roll)

As we have noticed, cigarette sales in areas where they have been heavily, and unfairly, taxed, have dropped considerably.

BTW, I haven’t seen a tax stamp on any roll your tobacco yet. This would be a new tax?

Even with these increases, tobacco taxes in the USA will still be lower than in Canada- here in Ontario the $70 price for a carton includes $10 in federal tax and $30 to the province. Hasn't affected smoking rates but it has backfired on Big Tobacco thanks to the black market, where one can buy a carton in the city from a smuggler for $25 or go to the nearest Indian reserve and pay as little as $10. Here's how high tobacco taxes have affected the market:

50% of cigarette sales in Ontario are black market, mainly brands manufactured tax-free on Indian land.
Sales of national brand, fully taxed cigarettes have plunged.
Smoking rates have increased.

Have to legalize first. Don’t hold your breath.

As for cigarette taxes. Addicts will pay.

Time to grow your own tobacco then, screw the laws.

They keep this up there is going to be an event like the Boston Tea Party, tobacco fields set on fire, tobacco transports hijacked and burned in public squares.

My, aren’t we the smug one. Tobacco is legal. It’s a personal “choice” to smoke or not.

What’s your vice? Twinkies, red meat, driving, drinking? I’m sure smokers will be standing right behind you when your “pet” gets attacked. Yeah, right behind you.

Why don’t they just raise cig prices to $100 per pack? We could solve all our econamic woes. They certainly think smokers are bottomless pits. Someday they will squeeze them too hard.

As soon as they go after and tax something you want or like, let us know so we can give you the same support you have for others. Nothing.

Sooner or later there will be a special tax on bicycles, exercise equipment, and good genes. You just wait!
