Obama Radio crashes and burns in DC

The cult of personality appears to have ebbed a bit since Barack Obama had to begin governing two weeks ago. The Washington DC radio station calling itself Obama 1260 and featuring liberal talk stalwarts Bill Press, Ed Schultz, and Stephanie Miller has given up the ghost already, a victim of undetectable ratings. Howard Kurtz notes that not all political radio has that problem:

President Obama may be riding high in Washington, but OBAMA 1260 is not.

The area’s only progressive talk station is changing formats, dropping such syndicated liberal hosts as Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller and Bill Press in favor of financial news, starting next week.

The move by Redskins owner Dan Snyder, who purchased the station, WWRC, and others in Washington last summer, leaves the city without a liberal radio outlet. Program Director Greg Tantum says he thought the station could work because of enthusiasm over Obama, but that ratings collapsed to a level that could not be measured after the election.

But ratings nearly doubled, he says, at Snyder’s conservative station, WTNT, which features Laura Ingraham and Bill Bennett.

Wonder what they’ll do with Screwball and Osama bin Olbermann on MSLSD - if possible, I’m sure they’re ratings will go ever lower - they can’t bash Bush and Chrissy still has a tingle going up his leg. I imagine Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are going to watch their cable ratings droop as well. And yet Limbaugh/Levin/Hannity still ride higher than high in their markets. Do we have any new figures on their market shares since the coronation?

Missed the NBC pre-game (5 HOURS??) because I heard Overbite was going to be on it.

“The move ... leaves the city without a liberal radio outlet.”

Not true. NPR and WTOP are still on the air. As well as 89.3’s brand of “Jazz and Justice Radio.” Can’t get more lefty than them, but their Saturday morning music show is fantastic. And who knows what’s being broadcast over all the Spanish AM stations.

Personally, I can’t stand WTOP: I don’t need to hear what time every 3 minutes.

Well duh. There’s already fawning Obama TV, Obama newspapers, Obama magazines, hell the grocery store was selling Obama socks, there’s not much of a market niche left for yet another form of worship.

Libs don’t need talk radio. Most of them don’t know and don’t care what Obama does as long as they get some darn pie.

Absolutely. Air America and other lefty talkers are trying to fill an already-filled gap in American media. It was already filled by the lamestream media.

I occasionally hear Ed Schultz, by accident. There’s no information, no analysis. Just constant reiteration of whatever Stretch might have said that morning.

A conservative has to listen to right-wing talk radio because right-wing talk radio tells what is actually going on in Washington, and what the latest subterfuges and deceptions of the left are. A lefty doesn’t need to listen to lefty talk radio because he already “knows” all he needs to “know”—sodomy good, surrender good, fornication good, higher taxes good, killing babies good, Soetoro good.

WWRC was once WRC. One of the Washington stations that started up in the Twenties. It may have been the NBC affiliate from day one.

When I was a kid, Ed Walker and Willard Scott were the Joy Boys in the evening. They were a scream. Mornings, there were Al Ross, and Patty Cavin, who were local. And the NBC network soap operas. At night, D.J.s who played what’s called “easy listening” nowadays—non-Rock Pop music—the remaining Big Bands and the Rat Pack stuff.

Obama carried DC by something like 92-8%.

But liberal talk radio won’t even worth there.

It’s a conundrum, I tell you.

I heard today that WTNT is going to have a new conservative host this week but their website is down for maintenance, perhaps updating it for the big announcement. Have you heard who the new conservative host might be?

So are Schultz and Press. But at least they didn’t stagger out of a bar on a Sunday night, fall down and knock all their teeth out, and then blame “right wingers”. (Not that I’ve heard, anyway)

Why advertise on a commercial liberal format talk station when government supported NPR broadcasts the same liberal swill with no ads?
