I looked at our local transfer of wealth. One thing that popped out was the fourteen million for the downtown library. My husband and every other person in the private sector has been hectored for the last five years to give a donation to the library. No one is willing to give money. The library has become a de facto homeless shelter. The last time I went, I accompanied my high school daughter and there was a guard who sole job was to wake up the homeless or kick them out if they fell asleep. I wish that I was kidding.
How are they going to maintain these projects after they are built?
There was a hundred million dollar private gift to our town several years ago to construct a civic center. In the end the cost was twice what the initial proposal was. And now the city won’t take title because they can’t afford the maintenance on the building.
What happens when the cost of these projects exceeds the cost allotted? We all know that in government that is a given. Give us some. We need more. How are they going to maintain this?
