SENATOR JUDD GREGG: CONFIRMATION OF GEITHNER NECESSARY TO HELP US WEATHER FINANCIAL CRISIS

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) today commented on the confirmation of Timothy Geithner as the new Secretary of the Treasury. The Senate confirmed this nomination by a vote of 60 to 34.
Senator Gregg stated, “The United States is facing one of the most significant financial crises in the history of our country, and it is important that we have someone serving as Treasury Secretary who understands how serious the risks are and is committed to helping hardworking Americans, retirees, and businesses during these challenging times. I recognize some of the concerns about Mr. Geithner’s actions in the past, but it is clear that he has the qualifications and experience to fill this role. Confirmation of Mr. Geithner today was necessary so that the Administration and the Treasury Department can now move seamlessly forward and continue rebuilding our financial markets and restoring confidence in the global economy.
“I look forward to working with Secretary Geithner, the Administration and my colleagues in Congress to quickly and responsibly address our economic challenges.
