I had to laugh at that one, too. I wonder what percentage of graduate degrees end up working for the government?
Then count on losing the conservative south-the cornerstone of the GOP.
Seriously. The fact is that the candidate himself makes a big difference regardless of all these factors and trends that the analysts like to look at. McCain turned out to be a real dud. I never really liked his politics but you’d see him on the Sunday shows or whatever and say, wow, that guy is pretty impressive. But as a candidate he was lousy — lame in the debates, mediocre speaker, not much charisma, no really compelling vision. And so he lost the election to a much more impressive guy. Frankly I was relieved we got 46% and can’t wait to see what happens when we field a real candidate.
The first irony: Republicans have typically avoided block-constituency politics, instead giving priority to the individual. They have both won and lost that way. Here, Barone is assuming the former in his premise.
The second irony: Abondoning basic foundational tenets of a healthy society (marriage, children) only removes what little braking power we have against total economic and cultural collapse. Need to look at dying nations in Europe to see the consequences.

A good friend of his is a friend and City Councilman of mine and he is a life long friend of Sen. McCain’s he had a few of us come to an event for McCain and he was wonderful one on one funny and quick with the come backs but as a public persona he is/was a dud I agree!
