From looking at his former positions, that he had used to get elected in a Left-leaning State like MD, he was actually taking a rather daring risk to lean as far Right as he did.

I hope reaching this level on a National stage helps him feel more confident in being more conservative on some of the bigger "Third Rail" issues like RKBA and Federal over-reach like Roe V Wade.

There's a lot of "hope" and "if" in that. We've gotten screwed a lot the last few years by those we "hoped" would come around.
