Obama May Be Looking at Gregg as Commerce Secretary

All eyes in the Senate were on Republican Judd Gregg of New Hampshire Thursday amid speculation that President Obama is seriously considering him as his Commerce secretary.

For his part, Gregg refused to comment on reports that he is a finalist. Obama had earlier tapped Democratic New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson for the position, but he withdrew in December amid a federal corruption probe.

"I really don't have any comment on that at all," Gregg said. Later he added, "I can't comment at all on this."

If Obama were to nominate Gregg, it could have significant implications for the Senate. Under New Hampshire law, Democratic Gov. John Lynch would appoint a replacement who would serve until Gregg's term expires in 2010. If Democrats also win an undecided Senate race in Minnesota, that would give them 60 seats, enough to choke off debate with a unified caucus. Republicans bristled at that possibility and suggested Gregg might face pressure to turn down the job if offered

This concerns me greatly. Not like one more Democrat would make too drastic a difference, but if Franken gets in, there is an absolute filibuster proof Senate.

Judd Gregg, don’t take it, it’s a TRAP! Zero is looking for a fall guy!

I agree with your assessment. Personally I don’t like Greg, he is too nervous for my taste, but we need the warm body in the GOP.

Even if Obama’s intentions are honest, he should still turn it donw. We can’t allow the Dems a fillibuster proof senate. It’s not worth it!

They’ve used it quite effectively since 2006. Really what have the Dims done since they took over back then? Nothing. Making the Kos Kids Krazy.

I wouldn’t put it past Obama to appoint Gregg and then dump him after his replacement is sworn into the Senate.

Nothing could stop Obama from giving Gregg the title, but NO responsibility. Let him sit in his office and do nothing.

If this happens, the blame would not be on Obama, who is acting shrewdly. Judd Gregg would be a quisling even to consider taking this position. How the hell could a real Republican consider leaving his Senate seat — especially when Republicans are so fragile — to join a Dem White House?!

the fact he hasn’t already said he wouldn’t take it means he’s going to.

You're right. If this guy claims to be “pro-life”, he's a liar or a quisling because nobody who believes abortion is immoral should work in Obama’s administration.

Can anyone tell me the LAST time [if ever] a President of one party nominates a Senator from the opposite party for a cabinet post, when that Senator was from a state with a Governor of the President's party?

Not to mention when that nomination, if accepted, would give the President's party a filibuster proof Senate?

I would bet that it has NEVER happened before in either case.
