Grassley launches porn inquiry (National Science Foundation)

Chuck Grassley knows it when he sees it.

The “it,” of course, is pornography. And Grassley has seen it deep in a demurely titled section of a report from the National Science Foundation — a report that says NSF employees have been spending significant amounts of company time on smut sites and in other explicit pursuits.

Grassley, the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, on Tuesday fired off a letter to the NSF’s inspector general requesting all documents related to the “numerous reports” and seven investigations into “Abuse of NSF IT Resources” cited in the foundation’s 68-page semiannual report.

Despite the less-than-lurid sound of the probes, the employees in question weren’t just logging onto their Facebook accounts or buying birthday gifts on Amazon.com. The report says they were watching, downloading and e-mailing porn, sometimes for significant portions of their workdays, and over periods of months or even years.

In one particularly egregious case, the report says one NSF “senior official” was discovered to have spent as much as 20 percent of his working hours over a two-year interval “viewing sexually explicit images and engaging in sexually explicit online ‘chats’ with various women.”

Ok. My IT guy blocks all kinds of sites from my employees, including youtube, facebook, and myspace. It is not hard for a system admin, to block all internet access of this type.
Whats the problem? They are supposed to be working.

From the article, “The semiannual report raises real questions about how the National Science Foundation manages its resources, and Congress ought to demand a full accounting before it gives the agency another $3 billion in the stimulus bill,” Grassley said.

Here's the breakdown on proposed "stimulus bill" funding for the National Science Foundation

"$3 billion for the National Science Foundation, including
$2 billion for research grants,
$300 million for research instrumentation grants,
$200 million for academic research facilities renovation grants,
$400 million for major research equipment and facilities projects,
$100 million for science education programs."

This should disqualify them from any stimulus. It appears they've got plenty of "stimulus" on the job.

Employees in any company I can think of, are immediately fired for this behavior.

Our politicians and federal employees are held to a much lower standard. As if that wasn’t obvious.

I am so disgusted by the actions of our ‘elected’ politicians. History books will have a field day discussing the government of this time as being the most openly corrupt in the history of AMerica.

Yep. I'm pretty sure that's standard practice in the private sector. These gov't employees must not have enough to do to keep them busy. Throwing another $3 Billion at them is not going to make the situation better.

Grassley needs to save his vital fluids to continue to resist the ONE!

Avoid distractions such as porn, and PROTECT OUR CONSTITUTION from all enemies, domestic and foreign.

Hmmm. We don’t have the sights blocked and yes I have checked facebook, freep, etc. but I can’t spend more than 5 minutes, maybe once or twice a day on nonwork stuff. I have a job to do. When I had a mindless clerical I used Youtube to play songs until I discovered online radio.

I hate to say this, but the employee who would waste more than 15 minutes of a workday online for personal reasons is going to find otherways to fool around. You just might not know what it is.
