PELHAM — The Massachusetts police chief who is facing involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the accidental shooting death of an 8-year-old boy at a gun show has resigned.

Pelham Chief Edward Fleury’s resignation was accepted on Monday by the Board of Selectmen, three months after 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj shot himself in the head with an Uzi during a Westfield gun fair.

Fleury’s company, COP Firearms & Training, sponsored the event. He has pleaded not guilty.

I don’t have an issue with kids shooting firearms if they are properly supervised. This poor young kid doesn’t appear to have been.

Ya uzis in rock and roll mode (whatever caliber) are a handful for longtime shooters...let alone a 8 year old. I never really liked them even in semi...although I realize there was a time when they were standard for use in executive protection and other such roles.

I thought his dad had been right behind him, supporting him.

Unless someone was helping him hold the gun he was not adequately supervised. Even then I seriously question the wisdom of letting an 8 year old fire a fully automatic firearm.

Not only was supervision poor but he was given a weapon he was nowhere near big enough to wield.
