Belgian creche stabbings: suspect quoted Heath Ledger (infants killed)

The suspect in the Belgian creche stabbings is said to have quoted Heath Ledger from the Batman film when he was arrested.

Kim De Gelder, aged 20, was arrested last Friday shortly after stabbing two babies and one of their carers to death in a gruesome attack that has stunned Belgium. He was dressed and apparently wearing make-up that gave him the appearance of the Batman character the Joker.

Investigators are examining whether the attack was timed to mark the first anniversary of the death of Heath Ledger, the actor who played the Joker in the film Batman, The Dark Knight.

It has emerged that when he was arrested, Mr De Gelder's only words were: "I have a question".

Patrick De Mey, the police officer who arrested Mr De Gelder, described the suspect as being in a passive and trance-like state.

"When I asked him to step off his bicycle and put his backpack on the ground he obeyed perfectly," he told the Gazet Van Antwerpen.

"But in answer to my questions, he clearly had no understanding. He continued to stare at me all the time with wide open eyes and a large grin on his face."

That sounds like demonic possession.

He didn’t quote “Heath Ledger”, he quote a character Heath Ledger played.

I kind of hate to see Heath’s name be smeared even though we all recognize it wasn’t Heath he was idolizing.

Anyway, just a nitpick. From a big fan of the great actor (Brokeback Mountain or not, and even that was a damn fine job of acting even if it made me a little sick to my stomach).

We sometimes play an awful, awfully high price for Freedom of Expression.

Most people can watch a movie or listen to music or read a book or play a videogame and not be inspired to commit horrific crimes. Yet there are a few who can’t.

I guess this sick kid is one of them. Not that this news will be any consolation to the parents of the wee kiddies who were killed, or the next-of-kin of the adult.

If he’s found guilty, what then? If he’s found not guilty, what then? It goes without saying that his genes should never be allowed to replicate.

“That sounds like demonic possession.”

I´ll go with you on that.

Agreed. Heath Ledger was reading a line in a script, not advocating murder.

To say that this nutbar was quoting something gives the crime way more logic than it deserves.

Given it's the 21st century and not the 10th, I'll go with your interpretation.

So Heath Ledger was the only person ever to say “I have a question.”

Because otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to say this dude quoted him.

Oh yeah, that and the Patriot just blew me away. That guy was very very talented. I could care less about 90% of Hollywood, but I was truly sad to hear he died. I enjoy talent.
