Good and safety-oreinted customer service procedures are neither charity nor nanny-state. Sorry you cannot see the difference. Most businesses would like to try and collect and work with someone who is having problems paying the bill instead of taking an action that may kill off the customer, ensuring they will not get paid.
Please stop responding to my posts, it’s just futile to discuss anything with you.
repeat after me... “no Obama nanny state”... and utilities follow the law and rules and regulations.
Past that, it’s up to people to manage their own lives — or else — be involuntarily committed when they can’t do so...
They did respond to the guy. They sent him notices to let him know what was happening. They had good and adequate procedures. It’s just that the guy ignored their contact and requests...
That’s how companies do it. Past that point, if a person won’t follow through, then it’s not the responsibility of the company.
And if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine, but the easiest way to have done that — would have been not to talk about it in the first place, if you didn’t want to do it...
“The city power company said that they didn’t know if the frozen guy was ever told how to reset the power limiter if it shut off.
Where was the breaker located? Outside no doubt, and the snow in northern MI is a$$ deep to a camel!
The temperatures at the time were way below zero outside. If the breaker tripped after he went to bed, he could have froze to death without being able to do anything.
Wake up half frozen, 93 and infirm, in a house that is black freaking dark, with no idea how to fix the power/heat...
I can’t believe some of the posts I’ve read on this thread ( and the other one on the same story) in Free Republic!”
You are`nt alone in that!
I was actually being sarcastic because the WA State voters, where we live, just voted in assisted suicide, which is really in preparation for socialized medicine. I mean why waste precious medical resources on people who don’t want to live? Well, death with dignity for the elderly is also a big part of socialized medicine, and since most bureaucrats and government contract workers tend to be extremely liberal, I was just applying the logic of Obama’s coming socialized medicine.
I'm done wasting time with you.
Hmmmm..., I thought you were already gone... :-)
Hey, n00b. There’s a difference between being our brother’s keeper and paying for a multi-kid, never going to be married welfare queen’s life of leisure.
Do you believe in anything besides your own self-righteousness?
I'm not a newbie, I've been here since 2004 and recently started a new account as I could not change the name on my old account. And I'm really getting sick of the paternalistic attitude of some posters who think that just because someone is new that their posts can be summarily dismissed. I wonder how many people have left FR based on this? I only hope I've never been guilty of doing that.
Theres a difference between being our brothers keeper and paying for a multi-kid, never going to be married welfare queens life of leisure.
When the expectation is for a financially uncertain utility in a near-bankrupt state to carry the financial burden of society there is no difference. If the utility doesn't act to keep itself financially solvent so they can pay THEIR bills then a whole hell of a lot more people will find themselves without power than just this one man.
Do you believe in anything besides your own self-righteousness?
I usually get this comment from Democrats.
I'm not self-righteous, I'm just consistent in my values and I do not apply the kind of situational ethics to matters that it seems so many FReepers are doing in this thread.
Really, the 14th Amendment requires equal treatment under the law. So if a 93 year old man can skip on his bills and expect a utility to suck it up and carry him financially then why can't a welfare queen or an illegal alien expect the same thing? Because they will.
What happened is tragic. But the means to prevent this are not found in asking for more government regulations or in expecting a struggling utility to bear the costs of social engineering. The answer is to be found in people like you and me donating funds to churches and etc. to help elderly folks in these situations.
Conservative values are the source of the solution EVERY time. Turning to a liberal answer anytime is the wrong answer every time.
It happened January 17th--Bush's watch! See President Bush can still be blamed.
