What is a coach to do when he puts in the scrubs of the scrubs and they keep on scoring? I’ve always wondered about that.
Not full court press

Or worse the scrubs start making mistakes which ends up in a close game.
When I played HS football, I was on the JV squad in soph year. We were ranked #3 in the state, and pretty much kicked the snot out of all teams we played. Well we were up 35-0 on this one team, so the coach decides to put us JV guys in for the last quarter. We gave up two quick touchdowns but still ended up winning quite easily. I mean we were all sophomores playing against seniors, and at that age, that is a big difference.
Well coach was not happy with our play, so we got to run suicides after the game (you know, spring to the 10 yard line and back, to the 20 and back, till you do the whole field). 1 set for each point we gave up. In front of a crowd full of fans. Oh boy was that fun. A couple guys ended up hurling in the end zone.
The following monday when showed no mercy when we played the jv squad from the same school. I think it was 42-0.

I have been a player and boy’s coach up through the HS level for over 30 years in the very competitive NYC environment. I have used all, or a combination, of the following tactics when it was obvious that our competition was clearly not up to our level. Usually these situations occured when we were scrimmaging against teams outside our league, but there are definitely ways to slow down the game when you need to. I am an extremely demanding, old school type, coach who requires a lot of discipline from my players and who tries to teach them to play the game the correct way. We try to play an extremely physical, high intensity game on defense and are very unselfish on offense. However, as competitive as I am, and as competitive as my players are, we never go out of our way to try humiliate someone else. There is just no reason for it and it shows a lack of sportsmanship and class. I don’t perceive it to be a weakness to take your foot a bit off the gas pedal when it is blatantly clear that you have shown your opponent that you have the superior team.
Having said all this, I do not understand how and why this game was scheduled based on the previous record of this losing team. The administrators (ADs) of both these schools, and not just this over-zealous, misguided coach, should have to answer for this debacle as well. I do agree that it was ridiculous for this losing team to be glorified and coddled by the MSM this morning.
1. Take off any full court or half court press, or pressure on the ball. Play a passive zone defense.
2. Walk the ball up court on offense, no fast breaks. No three pointers.
3. Require a set number of passes per offensive posession before a shot may be taken and minimal dribbling.
4. Work on rarely used offensive sets.
5. Play the least effective players on your squad as much possible.
6. Rotate players out of position to give them experience in other positions. Guards switch with forwards etc.
I told my player to beat them no more than 3-0. Only cross the ball and use your head and other such “rules” for the game prior to the start based on the beating they took from others in the area.
At half time it was 8-0. The other team scored on themselves, dropped “easy” passes to their keeper from my team and other completely moronic things to destroy their chance to stay close in the game.
I don't know what was worse - playing keep away from them the second half (35 minutes) of the game where the opponent made no attempt to go for the ball, played out of positions, and otherwise just laid down and quit trying. My team could have scored 30+ goals on them but we left the field 8-0 after my instruction that my players were to stop the ball if it appeared like it was getting too close to goal even if they had to pick the ball up with their hands if necessary.
The first half was humiliating to watch but the second half was even worse. I wanted to get in my car and leave. I believe in all who want to play should play but those kids appear to have been forced my mommy and daddy to get a uniform on and get fresh air. Organized sports require effort and there was none on that day and I suspect there was none at the 100-0 game.
The loss of a job for the lazy play, poor coaching, and kids who had no business being from the other team is overkill. They got on the court and should expect the other team to play the game.
JMHO.
