SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- Authorities are reporting at least eight inmates have been hospitalized after an incident at a federal prison located northwest of Orlando. No staff members were injured.
Early reports indicated that there were mass casualties involving gun shot wounds at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, which is approximately 50 miles northwest of Orlando and 35 miles south of Ocala.
"Everything is under control. The community is not in danger," said Tracy Billingsly, with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
Several emergency crews from Lake and Sumter counties arrived on scene shortly after 3 p.m.
A spokesperson with Orlando Regional Medical Center has confirmed that at least four people have been hospitalized and they are expecting three others to be brought to the complex. Numerous people were pulled out of the facility, five of which were loaded into separate ambulances. Patients arrived at ORMC, accompanied by federal agents.
FOX 35 has a crew on scene and is in the process of gathering more information. We will bring you more updates on MyFoxOrlando.com as they are confirmed. We will also have a report during FOX 35 News at 5 p.m.
Coleman Federal Correctional Complex is located just south of the central Florida town of Coleman, off of Highway 301. The complex consists of four facilities built to accommodate low to high security risk inmates.
MyFoxOrlando.com reported in October of 2007 on an incident at that same federal facility in which one inmate was stabbed and beaten to death. Osbaldo Farias, 36, and Gerardo Martinez, 29, were later charged with conspiracy to commit murder and first degree murder in the beating of fellow inmate Orlando Yazzie.
According to an investigation conducted by the Department of Justice, Farias and Yazzie were exercising in a recreation cage at the prison, when Farias stabbed Yazzie with a homemade knife approximately 13 times. Martinez then joined Farias in the attack and the two reportedly kicked and stomped Yazzie for approximately forty-five minutes. He later died from his injuries.

Did the news report under what circumstances that the guards were forced to shoot 9 of them?
Other than self defense.
Which is totally ok IMO.
Now if they just lined them up on a wall in a firing squad for marksman practice then the prisoners may have a bit to be jumpy about. /sarc

Update.
2:40 pm a stabbing started the brawl.
Out break started in the HIGH security area of the prison.
Things seem to be simmered down at this time.
Officials reporting no, repeat no threat to the public residents in the area.
Sound like it is under control at this time folks.
On a personal note it takes a certain type (I dont know how else to describe) of Man to be employed in an enviroment where the most violent, mentally disturbed criminals are housed.
