A 20-year-old man died in a late Thursday night one-car collision near the Broken Arrow Expressway, said Tulsa Police Cpl. T.J. Campbell.

According to police, 18-year-old Joel Jaimes was driving westbound at about 10 p.m. Thursday near 5000 E. 31st. St. with two passengers when he lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle rolled several times before hitting a light pole and coming to a stop upside down, Campbell said.

One passenger riding in the front seat, a 20-year-old man, died at the scene, Campbell said. The victim was still wearing his seatbelt in the vehicle when police arrived.

However, Jaimes and the other passenger ran from the scene, according to police.

Jaimes was later stopped by security at Cloud 9 Bar near 31st Street and Yale Avenue.

According to jail records, Jaimes was booked in Tulsa County at 2:15 a.m. Friday and is being held on charges of second degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an injury or death, driving without a license and insurance and also driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jaimes also is being held for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to jail records.

The second passenger has still not been found, Campbell said.

Police said they are still trying to find the victim's family.

These people are from Mexico. There is something about the laws in Mexico that causes them to run if they are able.

Last week, during our -20-degree cold snap, some Mexican ran from a fender bender, surrounded by two feet of snow, without a jacket. The deputies caught him very quickly.

The victim was still wearing his seatbelt in the vehicle when police arrived. (and was DEAD)

However, Jaimes and the other passenger ran from the scene, according to police.

[Jaimes] is being held on charges of second degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an injury or death, driving without a license and insurance and also driving under the influence of alcohol.

Where is his "failure to wear a seat belt" charge?

Laws? In Mexico? It’s a sleazeocracy. Ask anyone who has ever tried to do business there.

VERY common for accidents in Mexico for drivers to flee. They know that courts and judges can be tampered with, and police reports change to whoever offers the most $$ at the time of reporting. Paying money can also keep the news, off the airwaves..or paying money can get GOOD coverage. Legal bank documents (money) is powerful.

yes I know that but there is something about :if they catch you then you are responsible, if they don't catch you, you aren't.

Yes there is...

...traffic accidents are treated in mexico as criminal offenses. My understanding is that if nobody is killed, it is like a misdemeanor crime. If somebody is killed it is a felony.

The reason I know is that I had a head on just outside Moneterey....the mexicans in the vehicle who swerved into my lane all got out and ran. My friend and I didn't run. I spent a couple of days in custody, while my insurance agent worked on the problem with a lawyer and the "authorities". My friend spent the same time in custody in the hospital. The 3 mexicans showed up about 4 hours after the accident with their lawyers.....

The driver should have just turned himself into a goat and gone about his business. That’s the way they do it in Nigeria.

YEP - they run if they can - due to the corruption of police in Mexico. They also bristle at laws to protect their children - carseats took a LONG time for them to realize their babies wouldn’t die in them. They are very distrustful of authority.
Before ANYONE says I’m prejudiced - this explanation comes from a friend who married a woman from Mexico. It is the way it is...

I would be distrustful of authority if authority was always corrupt and had his hand out under his robe to receive a pay off. Biggest payoff wins.
