It was 20 degrees below zero in West Virginia last week, and 2 degrees above in Washington DC. 2008 now appears to have been one of the cooler years on record, and the almanacs are all predicting 2009 to be chillier. If it gets any colder, we may just have to take this global warming stuff seriously. But there is a more profound chilling effect taking place already this year, and one that we ignore at our own peril. Here’s a pop quiz that should set the stage:
1: Which of these two statements is hate speech? (a) Those guys are animals and should be killed. (b) That guy just called those guys animals and advocated killing them.
2: Which of these two statements is most correct? (a) The doctor has an ethical responsibility. (b) Ethics, schmethics – the doctor should do whatever the patient wants.
3: Which of these two statements is logically defensible? (a) This problem is not fully understood. (b) You’re just a denier.
If you picked choice (a) in all three of these questions, it is quite possible that you remain a thinking human being. If you picked choice (b), then you probably work for a government agency. Here’s why:
1: In the Netherlands, it is apparently not considered hate speech for imams to rant in the mosque about Jews being pigs, deserving of death, but it is considered hate speech to distribute a recording of those imams saying it. Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, admittedly no friend of Islam, has been recently charged with hate speech for his film “Fitna”, in which the loathsome exhortations of radical Islamic preachers were documented, including quotes from the Koran. Wilders has already been indicted by Jordan and is under death threats – (and the fact that most of us find that unremarkable is a measure of how inured we have become to living with hate). He cannot travel abroad for fear of being extradited and standing trial under shari’a law somewhere in the Middle East. Now, his own government has decided that by documenting such activities, he has violated some ethical canon (“Thou shalt not hurt feelings” perhaps?).
2: With the strong tilt towards Democrat dominance in both the executive and legislative branches of the American government, the scary “Freedom of Choice Act” is likely to gain ground. By this legislation, health-care providers would be criminally liable for acting on the dictates of conscience and refusing to perform an abortion, a remarkable logical contortion in defining “freedom of choice.” As it currently stands, the FOCA would strike down just about every state-imposed restraint on abortion, including requirements for counseling or parental notification, and essentially impose the government’s will on the ethical decisions of individuals, an ironic inversion of Roe v. Wade.
3: Global warming has become such a hot-button issue (sorry…) that individual states are setting up their own commissions to study it. Unfortunately, many of these commissions, like the recently formed one in Arkansas, are hijacked from the outset by the doctrinaire Center for Climate Strategies (CCS), and have no hope of coming to any conclusion other than those dictated by the CCS. When a scientific theory, whose proof remains debated, is given precedence over scientific inquiry, the outcome is no less draconian than the worst alleged predations of McCarthyism: those that go along get along, and those that don’t get the boot.
This is the nature, then, of the Big Chill of 2009: those that do not toe the lines of new orthodoxy should apparently just shut up. Freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and freedom of inquiry are only permitted to those who mouth the party line. If Wilders insists on exposing fascist behavior, he should be jailed. If doctors insist on following their conscience, they should be sued. If scientists insist on gathering data, they should be silenced.
If all of this sounds a bit Stalinist, then there may be hope for all of us yet. The Islamic Congress (OIC) does not yet govern Europe, Planned Parenthood does not yet manage the health industry, and Al Gore and the CCS do not yet govern the states. Yet, bit by bit, these organizations are imposing a Big Chill on the freedoms guaranteed us by God, Natural Law, and the Constitution. All they need to succeed is for people of conscience to remain silent.
Homework assignment: Speak up. Hurt a few feelings. Warm things up a bit.
Most things are turned upside down now. Good is bad, bad is good, etc.

I do. I told my daughter to read Atlas Shrugged. She had never heard of it. I was amazed because she is a junior in college. I think it should be required reading in high school. It is a modern classic. Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm were required reading when I was in high school in the 70’s. Civics and Government were required to. Times certainly have changed.
