Pastor Rick Warrens invocation was probably the most Christian prayer delivered in recent inaugural history. Not only did he pray in Jesus name, but he then recited The Lords Prayer, the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.
The one thing this certainly shows is that Pastor Warren does not shrink from conflict or controversy. He had been blasted by liberals over his rejection of gay marriage and support for Californias Proposition 8. And President Barack Obama was heavily criticized for asking Warren to give the invocation.
Pastor Warren declined all interviews before the inauguration saying there were too many requests to accomodate them, and said that his prayer would speak for itself. And did it ever.

"Pastor Rick Warrens invocation was probably the most Christian prayer delivered in recent inaugural history." Unlike Joseph Lowery who went out of his way to provide cheap comedy in the midst of prayer and show his strong racist streak, Rick Warren worked hard to be inclusive, compassionate and understanding. This Lauren Green has no clue as to what Christianity is other than the enemy to her and most of the main stream media.......apparently including Fox News.
Do you mean “formerly” fair and balanced?
I couldn’t believe all the slobbering that was going on on Fox last night. Who was that ditz that proclaimed herself a huge Bon Jovi fan. I almost lost my supper over that one.
And what was O’Reilly referring to when he mentioned something disgraceful that NBC had done but he wouldn’t talk about it until his show today? Anybody know what he was talking about?
Very surprised that Rick Warren quoted the Quran in his invocation
Rick Warren in Inauguration prayer: “You are the compassionate, the merciful one...”
Following right after “Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one.”
“The compassionate, the merciful” is, of course, a reference to the invocation at the beginning of every chapter of the Qur’an except one: Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim, “In the name of Allah, the compassionate, the merciful.”
Making sure everyone feels included — terrific. But the prayer indicates yet again that there is little general awareness of the reasons why the term “Judeo-Christian-Islamic values” is a misnomer.
Just as Patrick Henry indicated, and that truth still holds today...if we will hold the course, God in Heaven will raise up friends to help fight these battles.

Congrats to Rick Warren. I missed most of the coverage. Were there any brave souls repeating the words with him?
Michelle prays with her eyes open.
I do not understand the furore about a Christian minister reading peaceful passages from the Christian Bible. He is a minister. What else would he read?
I am not trying to be pro Christian etc etc.
Fact is that for the sake of argument if we ever elected a Sikh President I would be very fine with a Sikh minister reading a peaceful prayer and benediction from the Sikh Bible.
That is what ministers do. They read from their religion’s bibles. As long as the passage is peaceful and a blessing, I am all OK with it. I don’t have to accept the religion to accept the prayer.
I say this from personal experience. I went to a marriage ceremony of a Hindu friend. The Hindu priest read a nice passage from the Bhagvad Gita about marriage responsibilities. I was very respectful and listened to it. Never was I offended even though it is not my religion and I dont personally share the Hindu faith.
The difference between religion and Christianity is that all religion is the enemy of God. Religion is man, by man’s works, trying to gain the approbation of God. In Christianity, God seeks mankind through the salvation ministry of Jesus Christ. Christianity is not a religion. Christianity is a supernatural walk in life bu what He provides.
Cvengr,
Good Post. However my point is that I dont know why people are upset that a Christian minister read from a Christian Bible. What else was he supposed to do?
In one of my workplaces many moons ago they invited a Rabbi to come bless something (new building or something I forget). All he did was read from Old Testament. That was what was expected. He is Jewish and hence will read from the Jewish bible.
No one went and yelled at him that “Hey Rabbi, how come you did not give thanks to Jesus Christ”
Why is the intelligensia in this country so anti-Christian?
“The one thing this certainly shows is that Pastor Warren does not shrink from conflict or controversy.”
yet it won’t save one baby from Obama’s abortionist friends.
The Quran more likely quoted other text at its invention. Besides, the bible clearly talks about God being the Compassionate and merciful.
“The compassionate, the merciful is, of course, a reference to the invocation at the beginning of every chapter of the Quran”
not necessarily:
Merciful G-d, merciful G-d, powerful G-d, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness and truth. Preserver of kindness for thousands of generations, forgiver of iniquity, willful sin and error, and Who cleanses. (Exodus 34:6-7)
I agree in that I see no problem in relying on Scripture.
Rick Warren mentioned Jesus’ muzlim name...What the muzlims call him...
He prayed the ‘our Father’ prayer and closed it with Amen...Did not pray in Jesus’ name...
Because it is cool.
A good ministry would be to go into the elite culture and try to make it cood to be Chrisitan again. It would probably work over the long term and it probably would be good for some laughs.
If you mean the furor from the press and the libs, then the furor is because they cannot stand Christianity.
If you mean the furor at FR, it's because there is an extremely vocal group of people who claim that Rick Warren isn't a real Christian, or even say he is a follower of Satan. Some say the same things about C.S. Lewis, and call him a "sun-worshipper."
Thank you. And the Shema is, of course, from Deuteronomy, which we happen to be studying right now in church. The Shema is in the mezuzah that I have had on my doorpost for more than 20 years.
Warren also called him by his Hebrew name, Yeshua, and by his name "hey-zus" as spoken in Spanish. Arabic-speaking Christians call Jesus "Isa."
What better way than to attract the attention of those who have speak of Isa but do not know him as the Messiah? It was God-given brilliance on the part of Warren. It is sheer ignorance on the part of those who suffer from WDS -- Warren Derangement Syndrome.
