So why bother with shortwave?
It's easy and cheap -- and fun. You can hear and learn things that you would never find even if you work your search engine like a mule. From Swaziland to Paris to Havana, shortwave broadcasters can surprise an adventurous listener more than any MP3 playlist.
"You tune carefully, twist the radio from side to side, and there's still a bit of a 'Hey, I made this happen!' sort of thing," said Harold Cones, retired chairman of the biology and chemistry department at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.
It's also magic. Shortwave radio enthusiasts acknowledge the thrill -- the romance, in a way -- of going out at night and snaring news, music, odd bleeps, religious zealots and other broadcasts from the wild sea of frequencies in the sky.

I kinda like radio havana, but it is really biased.

What’s a good book for a layperson about setting up sw? I just got the ccradio sw from CCCrane and need to know how to use the sw part.
Thanks! Gotta sign off soon, talk to you later!!
How do you like the CC Crane radio and which model??
Usually I can get Iran’s propaganda station “The voice of Justice” at about this time of night very strong in the summer when greyline propagation is working great for me.
The sun is just rising in tehran as it sets here in Tx.
I dont know why I cant get it now that winter is here.
I hear them at 6120 kC AT 0130~0230 UTC
VOJ is THE PROPAGANDA station. They make Havanna and Moscow and Bejing sound like FOX news L0L.

We’ve had the CCRadio Plus for yrs because that is the ONLY radio that will pick up Rush in these mtns. The new one we just purchased (CCRadio SW) has the AM/FM and SW.
What I don’t like about them is that the display is digital and “breaks” after a couple of yrs. In other words, you can’t tell the time or the radio station you are on or any other stations ie weather, tv. The reading on the display looks like arabic. You can pick up the reception, just can’t see what the display says.
I sent it back to them once and they repaired but it went out again and I’ve learned to live without the display because all I listen to is Rush.
I want to learn how to use the SW part of our new radio.
I can chime in for a bit. :-)
Listening to Radio Taiwan Int’l clear as a bell at ~6000.
I going to get the Kaito 1103, thanks to you and have read some other online recommendations.
I can spend more though...... Do you recommend a step or two better and what would it be?
Thanks very much...
I am very happy with the Kaito. Its a superb radio for the price.
The only thing it lacks is filtering. When the band is crowded on HAM bands, its nice to be able to narrow the filter to cut out other signals that are splattering on what you want to hear.
The Kaito only has 2 filters
My Ten Tec RX320 has 39 filters, but doest have as good of audio as the lowly kaito, anat 3 times the price the ten tec isnt portable and has to be run via a computer.
Also, the ten tec doesnt get FM.
Both are great receivers but that Kaito 1103 is really awesome for 80 bucks. I just work the crap out of that thing
BTW Radio Taiwan was supposed to go off the air and just be internet streamed to save money.
People all over the world complained. So they are still transmitting? I havent listened to them in a while Radio Taiwan makes NPR sound right wing L0L
Remarkable
Ok, sold. I’ll order it tonight or tomorrow from one of the places online...
I got mine at http://www.radios4you.com/
