Police in Pennsylvania said six high school students are facing pornography charges after three girls sent photos of themselves via cell phones.
Greensburg police said the three female Greensburg-Salem High School students, ages 14 and 15, have been charged in Westmoreland County with manufacturing, disseminating or possessing child pornography after they allegedly took pictures of themselves -- two of the girls nude, the other semi-nude -- with their cell phones and sent them to other students, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Tuesday.

bingo! but even if charges are dropped you are now in the system having been thru jail and court. they never take you out.
Then you'll be charged with possession of child porn, which is very illegal. Admitting that you want illegal 'youthful' pics of underage girls in a public forum- well that may bring a knock on your door by someone official looking.

This actually is a neighboring school district...so I have been following it in our local media. According to the last report locally, PA law would regard the possession of the pix by the receiver as possession of kiddie porn; if they forwarded the pictures to anybody (any age) that would be distributing kiddie porn. The girls (in the photos) would also be guilty of possession and distribution. BUT...in PA the local District Attorney (for Westmoreland County) has some wiggle room...not a lot BUT this may not be life ruining (just financially ruining for the parents involved as they all lawyer up).

Actually, this is the City of Greensburg and Salem Township in Westmoreland County. I live in this County, and it is pretty ‘red.’. Johnb Murtha is from the uber ‘blue’ Johnstown.

The parents should take away their computer and cell phones until they are able to pay for it themselves. That will get their attention. Embarrassment tends to wear off in due time.
Sadly, that is what we are fast coming to.
Their parents are the ones that need brought up on charges... obviously they have seriously failed these girls in their upbringing.
No, these aren't kids just being kids. They ARE in fact, producing and distributing child porn, even if it is pics of themselves.
Dumb kids, yes, but they are sending these pics to unsuspecting boys, and eventually those pics WILL get out and be distributed to pedophiles.
I doubt these kids will end up with such a serious charge, but the charge has to be laid regardless. A lesson has to be learned.
The age of consent in many areas is under 18 (I think Hawaii is as low as 14). That means it is legal for them to consent to activity with an adult (over 18). Should they too be permitted to “trade snapshots”?
Here it isn’t the taking the picture that is the crime. It is the distribution.
Not the same thing, sorry. kiddie porn is very obvious, as are those who take and distribute that stuff and those who collect it.
Not likely, though. The cell phone has become the new 'latchkey'.
Actions and recordings of activities are two different things.
In Texas, homosexual sodomy was illegal (remember Lawrence v. Texas) but videos of two homosexuals engaging in sodomy was not prosecuted as “obscene”.
Scatalogical and zoophilia activities are not criminal in many areas but videos of them are obscene and distrbution of them may be criminal in some of those communities.
And it was only recently that a district court struck down the laws in Texas that made dildos obscene (and for women that owned more than something like 5 or 6, they were considered owning with the intent to distribute).
It does seem pretty weird. But then, the world gets weirder every day.
And that will happen one of two ways, either the legislatures that passed those laws will need to quickly rewrite them, or some judge is going to toss the whole law out as being "vague", since the legislators had no right to delve into one's privacy in this way to deprive the errant teenagers' of liberty.
I'm hoping the prosecutors involved will see the wisdom of not letting this stuff go before judges who will gut the kiddie porn laws in such a way. The embarassment factor has already been plenty of punishment in these cases.
Perhaps when legislatures rewrite these laws, they can address the situation of underage girls sending nude pictures of themselves to boys, and simply make it a violation (not a full crime) to do so, where part of the sentence is to put the "evidence" on a website. That might discourage this activity!
It is producing and distributing pornographic material to others, no consent involved. Those boys in turn probably distributed this material to others, and so one and so on. Just wait, I'll bet even more adolescent boys will be charged as those already charged talk.
