"It looks like in an act that defies common sense, a bill has been introduced in the South Carolina State Senate that seeks to outlaw the use of profanity. According to the bill it would become a felony (punishable by a fine up to $5000 or up to 5 years in prison) to "publish orally or in writing, exhibit, or otherwise make available material containing words, language, or actions of a profane, vulgar, lewd, lascivious, or indecent nature". I'm not sure if "in writing" could be applied to the internet, but in any event this is scary stuff."
South Carolina law makers should assert that the entire state is one community for purposes of this standard. Tenth Amendment, state police powers, state sovereignty...
All the things that the left hates.
South Carolina aggressively lured in foreign car manufacturers, like BMW. Do you believe they’re going to be there in two years?
The state has much larger problems than people cussing.
So?
OK, Section 2 Issue:
SECTION 2. Religious freedom; freedom of speech; right of assembly and petition.
The General Assembly shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government or any department thereof for a redress of grievances.

I guess I have to wait to do a number one until I’m through SC. My mouth could be construed as an assault weapon on some bad days:)
So, focus resources on those very real problems, such as unemployment.
And, getting off the Federal gubmint welfare program. This is from the Tax Foundation:
Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures: South Carolina is a Beneficiary State
South Carolina taxpayers receive more federal funding per dollar of federal taxes paid than the average state. Per dollar of federal tax collected in 2005, South Carolina citizens received approximately $1.35 in the way of federal spending. This ranks the state 16th highest nationally and represents a slight rise from 1995, when South Carolina received $1.20 per dollar of taxes in federal spending, ranking it 18th highest nationally. Neighboring states and the amount of federal spending per dollar of federal taxes collected were: North Carolina ($1.08) and Georgia ($1.01)
Oh, so this means you can’t say publicly SAY- “Look- a butt humping fag”, you can only do it in public. Wonderful.
The state seems to be on life support, dependent on the federal gubmint to keep the lights on.
I doubt that profanity will solve that.
No, profanity won’t solve it — but spending a ton of money to enforce the law won’t help matters any.
Do you believe those companies, like HBO or any hotel chain that has Cablevision, is going to just shut down? They’ll pool their considerable resources and fight the law. Costs to the state could run into the millions.
Cite, please.
Cite what? This is common sense 101. When state legislators pass a law companies don’t like, the companies regularly present legal challenges.
And that’s not even counting the court costs of individuals fighting charges.
The whole thing doesn’t make sense. SC is essentially a welfare state passing a very expensive law it can’t afford, that may not even hold up in court.
I thought that said “www.scathouse.gov” for a moment.
This Bill must have been introduced by someone’s idiot nephew who happens to be a lawmaker. It raises serious questions about the state. Isn’t Lindsay Graham bad enough?
Yeah, right. They’ll pretend to be Puritanical, but either ignore the sphincter chasers or make them a protected class.
finally!
No, that's question begging 101. Cite, please.
“Uh, Congress shall make no law...”
Uh, the doctine of incorporation under the 14th Amendment, applying all of the Bill of Rights (except for the 2nd for now — soon to be heard) to state governments...
