arack Obama: it is no longer essential to kill Osama bin Laden
Tom Baldwin in Washington
Barack Obama last night suggested that removing Osama bin Laden from the battlefield was no longer essential and that America's security goals could be achieved by merely keeping al-Qaeda "on the run".
"My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him," he said. "But if we have so tightened the noose that he's in a cave somewhere and can't even communicate with his operatives then we will meet our goal of protecting America."
His comments, in a CBS interview last night, represent a significant watering down of the "dead or alive" policy pursued by President Bush since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. They also appear to contradict Mr Obama's own statements made in the election campaign.
As recently as October 7, in a presidential debate, Mr Obama said: "We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority."
But yesterday, the President-elect adopted far less aggressive language, saying his "number one priority" was to protect America from further attack.
"I think that we have to so weaken [bin Laden's] infrastructure that, whether he is technically alive or not, he is so pinned down that he cannot function," he said. "And I'm confident that we can keep them on the run and ensure that they cannot train terrorists to attack our homeland."

man, that sounds eerily familiar. who else do i know that said that?
what a woos
He’s already dead, Mr. Soon-to-be-tool-President.
So in other words, he is going to do the same thing President Bush did. Man these hypocrites would be laughable, if the stakes, our very existence, weren’t so high.
i can’t wait for 0 to f up!
What? Hillary “can’t find a 7foot man hiding in Pakistan” after all?
hmm, that is not change.
I thought Hillary was the 7' man.
Why would Hillary be looking for a man?
It might have meant something a few years ago. Now? who knows. It would probably be a little victory at the most but that would be something at least. It sure would feel good to see him swinging from the gallows poll.
“But if we have so tightened the noose that he’s in a cave somewhere and can’t even communicate with his operatives then we will meet our goal of protecting America.”
Obama’s ignorance is showing. As in how do we know if we have him confined to a cave somewhere if we do not know where he is? This guy is scary.
He is plagiarizing President Bush????
Looks like to me, unlike Kerry..who flipped around like a whirly bird during the election...Barry took notes and waited until he got the nomination to start flip-flopping.
(Although, if you listened to all the “Hope and Change” baloney from the beginning of his campaign, he flipped around several times.)
Yes, I’m sure there’s a cabinet position you’d like him to fill.
Bush last night on Larry King.
This guy started out with “change” then he appointed enough Clintonistas that he looked like Clinton III. Now his foreign policy looks like GW III.
This man (Obama) is nutter than a pecan pie.
if Hilary looking for Rahmbo?
WOW,did he get a real MSM pass on his “vacation” to Africa-you never heard one word from them about his comings or goings.
Not even Drudge announced his return to the States-did he actually return?
Maybe Hitlery will find him in the halls of the WH
