“I heard that he has reserved a private air strip for the hollywood folk and their private jets.”

Dulles is closing a runway.

It might surprise you, but most Hollywood celebrities do not own "private jets", and they generally rent them...

Rent from who?

Most are owned by multi-billion dollar corporations...You know, the people with the real big dollars, those that sponsor these celebrities, and that actually control a lot of what goes on in D.C.

You are correct, the $160 million is for security. That’s easy to fix: no security. Send security to the Mexican border instead.

Does anyone have figures on how much the celebrations normally cost? How much is typically spent? And is it more or less than what Obummer is spending (of tax-payer money)?

The unprecedented act of cancelling the public inauguration ceremony on grounds of “economic emergency” would just be another guaranteed way of sending the financial markets into a panic, and causing financial losses to US taxpayers many time greater than $160 million. Really, this thing has been thought through by rational people, and they are handling it in a rational way. A larger-than-ever crowd of Americans want to exercise their freedom by going to Washington and seeing this traditional Presidential inauguration in person, and the federal government is providing the necessary funding to make sure the best possible security and crowd control measures are in place. Most of the money spent will end up in the hands of relatively low-paid workers, the sort of people who assemble bleachers, move porta-potties, drive buses, etc. These people will then spend their extra earnings, in some cases making a mortgage payment that will keep them out of foreclosure, or making a rent payment that will keep a rental property owner out of foreclosure, or making a purchase that keeps a struggling business owner from having to go out of business or lay off workers. This is not something we should be upset about.

If you were a resident or business owner in DC or immediately surrounding areas, I imagine you’d see it differently.

Well I think it’s time to throw in the towel and face the facts. It’s over. Time for plan B. Get the hell out of the US for a few years, see what happens.

pretty sad we have to go to the Daily Mail in the UK to find out these matters. In doing so [Bush] paved the way for unlimited funding to be released to those local authorities responsible for staging the event. Obama didn't make the relevation until being questioned about one of his nominees. Almost an off-hand comment. Obama had a war chest of $27million, plus complete funding of his 'transition team' which also had funding thru it's non-profit status, Obama has raised over $50m from donations for the inauguration, and now, he springs on us, he needs even more? another $100 million more? and this guy is gonna be signing off on future budgets??? are you kidding me???? This guy has the NERVE to tell us, the world is ending, we're all going to have to tighten our belts, pay more taxes, change our lightbulbs, and park our cars and walk, and the list of attendees and events and entities standing in line for their handouts 'because Obama deserves it' just grows and grows like it's 1999, as the 22nd Amendment is oh-so-quietly repealed? No wonder so many people are retiring to 'reconnect with their spirituality'. God Help Us All. imo jmo moo best regards, blu

I expect I would see it differently if I were a resident or business owner in DC. I do not do big cities well even in times of quiet. I go to the city for museums, art or symphony. Other than that, I keep all my investments on the farm.

The big bill is for big security, and it’s needed.

Bullsh*t!

The economy is cartwheeling down range out of control, millions have lost their homes, investments, businesses, and jobs...And this monster government is going to spend hundreds of millions on a GD ceremony?

If this corrupt government had one ounce of responsibility they'd cancel this public parade and inauguration for Obama, due to an economic emergency, and conduct it in a secured environment, indoors, while televising it to the country. Period. No more wasting tax payer money that does not exist in the first place.

This is outrageous. Stop the excuses.

This is just another example of out of control, irresponsible, corrupt government driving this country to the brink.

Yeah, great idea. Cancel the public inauguration ceremony for the first time in US history, when the inauguree just happens to be the first non-white President in US history

You're making more excuses on the backs of the tax payers.

More people will view this through television than in public.

In addition, what comes first, the economic well being of our country, or a government ceremony that cost hundreds of millions that we don't have?

As I mentioned above, this government ceremony that will cost tax payers tens of millions could easily be held in a large, secured building, accommodating thousands, and be televised to the entire nation. This would save tens of millions in tax payer dollars.

You use the moniker, "GovernmentShrinker". I would suggest you change your screen name asap.

If the GD government is so extremely concerned with security, it would appear what was stated post # 77 and the above would be even more appropriate.

The unprecedented act of cancelling the public inauguration ceremony on grounds of “economic emergency” would just be another guaranteed way of sending the financial markets into a panic

Lets see, so far you mentioned if the above took place, the people would riot, and now you say this would cause panic in the financial markets...

Good God man, you need to change your moniker.

Stop the big government excuses BS. Stop all these pitiful excuses and idle threats.

You sound like a big government apologist, apologizing and making excuses for Bush spending like a drunken lottery winner in Vegas.

Stop the bull sh*t.

Every once in a while, the federal government does something right, and this is one of those all too rare occasions.

What are you, brain-dead?
First of all, the level of security necessary is directly proportional to the delusional megalomaniac involved and his supporters.

Remember the fancy set and the Greek columns incident? The subject that was all but banned from MSM reportage? You don't see the connection?

Socialists and dictators are big on "legacy" and pomp. This particular loser has started his legacy off with a bang!

I predict it will be a historic bang.
