(Washington, DC) -- DC area residents should not be alarmed to see and hear military aircraft overhead today as NORAD will be conducting a live-fly exercise. Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air Force F-16s and Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopters will participate in the exercise which also includes the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center and other agencies and military groups. The flights are expected to take place late at night and early in the morning. It is the latest in a series of exercises which have been conducted following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. In the event of inclement weather, the exercise will be postponed until Thursday.

President Bush Declares Federal Emergency For DC During Inauguration 01-14-2009 3:33 AM (Washington, DC) -- The District will be eligible for federal funds to help pay for costs linked to the inauguration after President Bush Tuesday declared a federal emergency for the city. The White House, in a statement, says the money will be made available to pay for, quote, "protective measures that are undertaken to save lives and protect public health and safety." The Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse the District for eligible expenditures on Inauguration Day above the 15-million dollars already budgeted last year for the day's events.

Can I take it then that this inauguration is being handled by FEMA as a potential emergency? Not an auspicious start.

We'd be alarmed if there weren't.

Wasn’t there one of these on or about Sept. 11, 2001?

Are we to take it from this that we have an agreement with the terrorists to hold their attacks for a day with good weather?

Eh, I hear aircraft all the time. I live near the flightpath for Reagan National. Also, plenty of choppers flying around for all the auto mishaps on the beltway. Construction everywhere and the drivers here suck, even in the best of conditions. I won’t notice anything different. What I would notice is no aircraft noise at all.

Heard that the DC mayor wants a state of emergency for funding because of the inauguration. I’d have to agree to declare DC a disaster area.

Must be a real pain to interrupt Stargate operations to put on this show. NORAD is just a cover for the SGC. ;-)

plenty of choppers flying around for all the auto mishaps on the beltway. I get some of that, too. So far today the only helicopter that's flown over that doesn't usually is one of the BIG ones. We loved it.

I can see crackpots making idle threats along with legitimate intelligence leading law enforcement to think something might actually happen. The analysts are probably swamped.

DC, MD, VA Spending Millions On Presidential Inauguration 01-14-2009 3:33 AM (Washington, DC) -- The Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama has already cost cash-strapped Maryland eleven-million dollars, and state leaders want to be reimbursed. At a news conference today on Inaugural preparations, Governor Martin O'Malley said the federal government did not set aside money to help local governments. O'Malley says he, Senator Barbara Mikulski and Representative Elijah Cummings will seek reimbursement from the feds. Virginia and the District are also being hit by unbudgeted expenses. In all, the Inauguration is costing the three jurisdictions some 75-million dollars.
