“Hmm, giving the big three “a run for OUR money” is an odd turn of the phrase, I must say, LOL. Fixed.

I bought an Elantra new, in 2002. It has been rock solid. I had to replace one cable inside the drivers door on the window lifter. I have changed oil, put in gas, changed filters, fluids, wiper blades, engine belts, tires and brakes at reasonable intervals.

That’s all. It has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. From minor details of the fit and finish of the interior, to the major mechanicals, it has been nearly flawless.

Starting in about 2002 (varies by model), their quality jumped dramatically, due to the leader of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group position passing from the CEO’s brother, who focused on low cost volume, to the CEO’s son Mong-Koo Chung, who focused on quality.

“Honda just sorta dabbled with the Pilot but that’s a niche type of truck for city folks.”

<<<Curious? Do you mean the Ridgeline? Maybe depends how you define a truck. Pilot is branded as an SUV and has an Odessy/MDX engine...

Re: your post... “It’s too bad that it looks just like every other car on the road.
Looks-wise, it’s a brown-wrapper, IMO.”

I couldn’t have said it better. I have no problem with the guts of the new cars, but why can’t they give them better bodies. Cars used to be works of art.

I'm glad you had good luck with the vehicle, the guy I spoke to at work has a 2005 and claims everything that could possibly break did, he can't wait to get rid of it when the warranty runs out.

Funny how that goes, I have a 1989 Ford which has gone through engine mounts and a set of tires, all the reviews complained about reliability but 20 years latter I've yet to see it.

My most reliable stead is my 1965 Ford that always starts and runs like a champ, the downside is that gets 9 miles to the gallon.(Passes everything but a gas station!)

"Those are my initials."

You must be one tough son-of-a-gun. With TuRD for initials and proud of it, you likely had to fight your way home from school most every day. I'm not gonna mess with ya.

What it is ~ as they say ~ your timing belt has a "clip" that keeps it from vibrating at start-up. If that "clip" is not properly seated the belt vibrates, and then comes off the mounts, and your whole engine turns to garbage in just a few seconds.

That's the sound you are hearing.

Take it to the dealer with this note ~ FIX CLIP.

Thanks. That's what it sounds like is happening. It's internal to the engine, it occurs at high revs (engine cold start in cold weather) when the engine first starts. I've told them about it several times, but they can never "replicate" it.

Will have to take it in in a couple of weeks, will tell them then.

You haven't got a couple of weeks. It's a well known phenomenon so maybe you want to take it to a different Hyundai dealer.

BTW, the reason they can't duplicate it is the fact that by the time you get to the dealer the engine, and the timing belt, and the clip, ARE NOT COLD anymore.

Tell them to call Frank Johnston at Malloy Hyundai in Woodbridge Virginia ~ or just speak to anyone there in the shop ~ they know this one!

Try: (703) 490-8170

Then call your local dealer and tell him what they said.

Well, it's been going on since winter of 06-07. Car runs okay. It's covered under the 5/60 and 10/100.

I've actually dropped the van off in the middle of winter before and told them exactly how to get it to duplicate (cold start, van outside, etc...). They claim no ability to duplicate.

Will take your information with me.

Van is two-plus years old and has only 15,500 miles on it. Of that, 4,000 is because of two trips to see relatives. If it was just commute miles, we'd have less than 12,000 miles on it in 28 months.

I will give them a call tomorrow AM and try to get it in. Problem is, we have to have a spare vehicle - will check in to my warranty program and see if the loner is a part of the program.

Muawihay, thanks much! We've been looking into the problem since it first occurred, but no one seemed to know what was going on. One tech came real close - said it was a timing belt tensioner, but because they couldn't replicate it, they couldn't allow the fix.

I won't take that now. Basically, it will be fix it now, or pay big to fix it later when it does fail. Since anything that gets oiled is covered under the 10/100, it will cost them a whole lot later.

Plus, they'll guarantee I'll never buy from them again - I might buy a Hyundai, but I'll drive an extra 15 miles to get to their competitor.
