On January 8, 2009, Richard John Neuhaus, 72, the intellectual force behind an influential coalition between Catholics and Protestants passed away after a long battle with cancer.
A Lutheran pastor who converted to Catholicism in 1990 a priest in 1991, Neuhaus served as the president of The Institute on Religion and Public Life, the conservative think tank that publishes First Things magazine.
Neuhaus was active in liberal politics until Roe v. Wade was handed down. His view on the importance of upholding religious orthodoxy is sumarized by “Neuhaus’s Law”, which states that “Where orthodoxy is optional, orthodoxy will sooner or later be proscribed”. This also informed his belief that public policy needed to adhere to established moral principles.

I too. “Rest in peace” seems inappropriate. He’s probably reading everything he can get his heavenly hands on and preparing to edit it soon.
Very sad. I just got the latest issue of First Things in the mail today, was reading his “While we’re at it” column at the end after dinner, and then came upon the last paragraph, which said that he was in the hospital again with cancer and wasn’t sure what the outcome would be.
It was like him to stay on the job until the very end.
I just renewed my subscription recently. I’ve also subscribed since the beginning, but I don’t know if I’ll renew after it expires this time. I just don’t think it will be the same. Fr. Neuhaus was the guy who made it a great periodical—not only by choosing the best contributors—Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish—but for his own outstanding contributions, his writing style, his inimitable sense of humor.

Yes, thank you! Our priest today, who is definitely not a sentimental man, told us he shed tears when he heard the news that Fr. Neuhaus was dead (”First Things” excerpts are often included in our parish bulletin). It was the first time he had shed tears since the day Pope Benedict was elected, the difference being on that day they were tears of joy, and this time genuine sorrow.
