‘I am what I am,’ says accused polygamist

L-R: Winston Blackmore, leader of the polygamous community of Bountiful, B.C., with Edith Barlow, Marsha Chatwin and Zelpha Chatwin.

CRESTON, B.C. -- Winston Blackmore, one of two men from a B.C. Mormon colony charged with polygamy, shot back Thursday that the charges against them are an attack on religious freedoms and accused the B.C. government of grandstanding as a provincial election looms later in the year.

"I am what I am, we are what we are. We are descended from a long line of Mormon-believing people," Mr. Blackmore, 52, said in a statement to reporters at the Mormon Hills elementary school near Creston, B.C.

"My family did not make up our faith nor did we establish the fundamental teachings of Mormonism."

Another colony resident, James Oler, 44, was also charged but was not at the news conference.

Expect the FLDS to abandon its Texas compound and head north once the polygamy law is struck down as unconstitutional.

Good point. Any discussion of polygamy must always pay attention to Islam, where huge blocks of young men are permanently locked out of ever having a family. No wonder so many are willing to take the "martyrdom 72 virgin" route.

FLDS is still a tiny fraction of its homeland so there are no evident negative effects of polygamy, but if it ever grew to a large portion of the population, something would give. Possibly an increase in the number of gays. I don't know. I only know that locking a huge segment of young men out of the possibility of having a family is a terrible crime against humanity.

Polygamists are worse than gutter scum in my book. Far, far lower.

Why not just wait?

Under Casey and Lawrence, there is no possibility that US polygamy laws are enforceable. Once DOMA is overturned, probably within a year, one state will legalize, and they'll be fine.

Time is on their side.

If Canada accepts homosexual marriage, how can they forbid polygamy? They cannot.

If it is all consensual, What’s your problem?/

Forced polygamy or marrying off 14 year old’s, That’s another story, but if legal aged adults want to engage in a permanent threesome, what business is that of mine?

I agree. But in this case there is more involved:

The polygamist colony at nearby Bountiful, B.C., has been investigated for decades by successive B.C. governments on allegations of sex abuse because of their practice of multiple brides, some of whom are 15 and 16 years old.

I should add to my previous post that the government should work harder on building its sex abuse case instead of taking a shortcut and trying to convict these people of polygamy.

“For example, it says: “While it is true that the Orthodox Jewish and Ismaili Muslim communities operate their own tribunals under the Arbitration Act, the vast majority of cases handled by both are commercial disputes. Furthermore, the Ismaili tribunal does not apply religious laws in arbitration.” In fact, Boyd describes the Ismaili Muslim Conciliation and Arbitration Boards (CABs) in detail. She reports, citing their figures, that 63% of their cases are “matrimonial,” 29% commercial, and 8% “other (including inheritance cases).” And she adds: “The CAB system is grounded in the ethics of the faith. . . .”

The survival of western civilization will be closely linked, in my opinion, to the survival of one-man-one-woman marriage.

There’s a reason why the United States outlawed polygamy. And it’s a damn good one.

“For example, it says:

I have no idea what or who “it “ is . However Marion Boyd , in December 2004, she released a controversial study that recommended that the Ontario government permit the adoption of sharia tribunals for Muslims who wished to have family arbitration disputes settled in that manner.

Sun, 11 Sep 2005 17:19:21 EDT

Premier Dalton McGinty said today Ontario will reject the use of Shariah law and will move to prohibit all religious-based tribunals to settle family disputes such as divorce.

His announcement comes after hundreds of demonstrators around the world this week protested a proposal to let Ontario residents use Islamic law for settling family disputes. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty was reacting to a recommendation, by former NDP attorney general Marion Boyd, to allow Muslims to establish Shariah-based tribunals similar to Jewish and Catholic arbitration bodies
