Gaza Strip is a concentration camp, says Vatican
The Australian ^ | From correspondents in Rome

THE Gaza Strip has been turned into a "concentration camp" by two weeks of Israeli bombardments, said a senior Vatican official. Cardinal Renato Martino, the Vatican's justice and peace minister, was quoted by the online Italian daily Il Sussidiario. "Let's look at the conditions in Gaza: these increasingly resemble a big concentration camp," said Cardinal Martino.

I'm not indifferent to the suffering of innocents caught up in this, and I mean no disrespect to the Vatican, but they seem to side with the Palestinians. No one is lobbing rockets every day for two years at Rome and Vatican City, heaven forbid. How would they react then?

Surely they no that the Palestinians only want peace on their terms, and we know what those terms are, and they are unacceptable. I hope the Vatican doesn't want that.

Well technically they are right. There is a huge concentration of people living in a small area. They are camping in shoddy housing, with crazy leaders who control them.

“Cardinal Renato Martino, the Vatican’s justice and peace minister
There’s the problem...”

My memory may be failing me here - but isn’t Martino the one who has a history of spouting off when he really isn’t speaking for “the Vatican”?

Parish priests provided no guidance for their flocks with respect to Obama’s pro-abortion actions. Most Catholics probably didn’t even know about his votes against BAIPA. Why did priests stand back and let their parishioners down? Conflict of interest. As long as churches are more worried about their tax exempt status than they are about the souls of their members, they are useless. They’re happy to take their 10%, but they can’t even think about rendering their 10% back to Caesar. Hypocrites.

“I wonder if Cardinal Martino would also comment on the molestation of young boys by Catholic priests worldwide?”

The Pope himself has done that and met with victims while he visited the US

Renato Martino is kind of a jerk. One of the holdovers from the earlier period when the dissenters were riding high.

A few of Martino’s sound bites:

[2003] A top Vatican official said Tuesday he felt pity and compassion for Saddam Hussein and criticized the U.S. military for showing video footage of him being treated “like a cow.”
“I felt pity to see this man destroyed, (the military) looking at his teeth as if he were a cow. They could have spared us these pictures,” he said.
“Seeing him like this, a man in his tragedy, despite all the heavy blame he bears, I had a sense of compassion for him,” he said in answer to questions about Saddam’s arrest.

On 6 November 2006, after the death sentence had been passed on Saddam Hussein, Martino said that:

...punishing a crime with another crime – which is what killing for vindication is – would mean that we are still at the point of demanding an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth...

He pleaded for clemency for Hussein and called for a peace conference aimed at solving all the major conflicts in the Middle East and reiterated his position that invasion of Iraq by U.S.-led coalition was wrong.

[Speaking in Cuba] he emphasized that solidarity precedes individual rights, and in fact solidarity forms the foundation of all other rights.

A concentration camp where the main staple is rocket launchers and C4.

This is NOT the Vatican’s position!
It is one misguided staff member.

Cardinal Renato Martino should look a little closer at justice and the actions that broke the “peace”!
What did the good Cardinal have to say about the 6,000 rockets flung from Gaza into Israel over the past many years?
Let’s look at the ACTIONS by the Hamas terrorists in Gaza that brought these conditions upon themselves!
ALL terrorist strongholds around the world SHOULD “look like concentration camps!
The Cardinal is exactly WRONG about whose interest is improved by continuing the fighting. In fact it IS in the interest of Israel to eliminate the ability of Hamas to fight and reign terror on Israel.
Whereas “peace talks” are ALWAYS designed to Israel’s disadvantage. In fact the world SHOULD “sit back and watch without doing anything”, because it will not end otherwise.

The fact that this land is the scene of bloodshed is entirly the fault of Hamas.

Why are there no data on the deaths of Jewish people killed by Hamas rocket fire over the past many years?

yes - I thought so.

He did speak out against Amnesty International, but generally he seems to trend towards namby pambyism.

It will be interesting if the Pope will now feel obligated to make a statement of his own.

After WWII I believe all of the refugee camps were empty by 1948, through absorbtion of refugees into other countries. Funny that the muslim countries surrounding israel chose not to accept their “arab brothers”

The Church has spoken out against FOCA (which is Obama’s baby)
Pelosi was chastised by her bishop.

This is a lib cardinal with a history of saying questionable things.

Let’s see if Benedict now feels he has to clarify.

“I’m saying this as a Catholic who gets really angry at the bashing of Pope Pius: The Church should be very careful about using Holocaust-related phrases like “concentration camp”. Especially when there’s no justification for the comparison. And even more especially when the term is being used to criticize the victims of the Holocaust.”

I would be careful about describing this as the “Church’s” position.

As far as I can tell this is Cardinal Martino’s position.
This man has a history of this sort of thing.
