AUSTRALIA’S use of coal and carbon emissions policies are guaranteeing the “destruction of much of the life on the planet”, a leading NASA scientist has written in a letter to Barack Obama.

The head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Professor James Hansen, has written an open letter to Barack Obama calling for a moratorium on coal-fired power stations and the use of next-generation nuclear power.

In the letter he says: "Australia exports coal and sets atmospheric carbon dioxide goals so large as to guarantee destruction of much of the life on the planet."

Wow! If Australia is powerful enough to destroy all life on Earth, then speaking as an Australian I want to use this power to our benefit.

Oi - America. Give us Hawaii - or we'll use our awesome coal power to destroy you.

Germany - hand over all the beer. Australia can never have too much beer.

England - simple request. The Crown Jewels. I'll make it easy.

Italy - all your best chefs.

France - you're lucky. You got nothing we want.

What about a straight jacket for “Professor” Hansen?

Can someone please get Hansen to retire?

Hey, Australians — who knew that so few of you could destroy all life on this planet, while 1.3 billion Chinese and 1 billion Indians have no impact at all?

Glad that Hansen continues to be such a model of reason and sagacity.

No more shrimp on the barbie?

That was made up for an American advertising campaign. I mean we do eat it and cook it on the barbie, but no real Australian would say shrimp - they're prawns.

Hanson is a crackpot to be sure. But as they say even a blind pig finds an acorn every once and a while. He is right about nuclear power. Let’s start building nuclear power plants as quickly as we can.

Pfft! If this nut can convince Obama to clear government hurdles so we can get to building nuke plants as fast as we can I could care less.

Let's see, use of coal and nuclear will guarantee "destruction of much of the life on the planet." On the other hand the moratorium suggested, would mean no electricity, resulting in "destruction of much of the life on the planet." Seems like a no win situation.

I have two observations:
1) That the goof ball should reduce his personal carbon foot print immediately.
2) If I have to choose destruction of much of the life of the planet anyway, I will take electricity, at least we can run the air conditioner to mitigate warming, so that at least we are not the "much of the life" that is destructed.

I have seen some posts that suggest Hansen is a crackpot or should be put in a straight jacket. Make no mistake, this man is no crackpot. This is far more than mere capricious kookiness.

He has credibility with the Socialists and nearly everyone that attends or has graduated a public school in the last 10 years. He is a dangerous man and if he has Zero’s ear then we could be in for some real trouble.

Until enough scientists call people like Hansen out and discredit this pseudo-science the Socialists will continue to use this to control and manipulate. Any Scientist worth his salt should call Hansen a fraud because that is exactly what he is. If I thought for a moment that Hansen really believed his own rhetoric I could easily dismiss him as a kook. Any real scientist knows that there is no way that Hansen believes any of this and there has to be some ulterior motive. We understand that Gore is a moron and his motive is money and fame. Hansen knows CO2 is not a significant factor in climate change and this is precisely what should concern us all. What is his motive?

To his credit, in this particular letter, it didn’t appear he was pushing all the “alternative” energy BS that is no more likely to power an energy hungry world than a Chinese gymnast is to have breasts. The nuclear propositions he made I think were good ones. Nothing brilliant there as we all understand that is where our energy needs will be filled in the future.

Even if Australia does destroy the world, they have, with Mad Max given us the blueprint for survival in a grim post-apocalyptic wasteland. So I say, we're even.
