When I was ten years old, the only thing I knew about Castro was what I saw on the news. It was 1957 or 56 and I wanted to take my .22 rifle and join his revolution.
I did notice some extremist organization called “The John Birch Society” said he was a Communist. All the media said he wasn’t. I asked my Father about the organization and he said he didn’t know much about the JBS but the man it was named after was a great man.
As it turned out the mainstream media were wrong, either that or more likely were lying about Castro and that extremist group was right.
I forgot to mention that my older Sister while between semesters at FSU, worked as a clerk typist at Hurlburt Field which at the time was part of Eglin Field. She was working with a large number of Cubans who were working to overthrow Castro. She even dated one until my Mother made her quit. Many of them had been severely tortured by Castro and all had lots or horror stories to tell.
Of course the main stream media told just the opposite for the most part. There were a few reports which were accurate but the vast majority were simply pro Castro propaganda.
