>>>Actually, NYC’s tap water is among the best in the world. It’s piped in from upstate reservoirs, not drawn from the Hudson. As of last year, NYC was one of only a few cities in the US that wasn’t required to filter its water before treating it.

I don’t dispute that. But it is still highly unlikely to be cleaner than ours.

Fair enough. It sounds like y'all are jockeying for position in the top few percentile, and I don't have a dog in that civic pride fight.

It’s not really a civic pride thing. My point is that even in really clean, pure water you can get algae happening, and that if I can do it with Waitakere City water, it can certainly be done with NYC water.

As to NYC tap water being unlikely to be cleaner than ours, that’s just commonsense. North America has smog, we don’t. North America has acid rain, we don’t. North America has all sorts of ways water can get polluted by heavy industry, we don’t.

Our water comes from clouds that come straight off the South Pacific Ocean, hit our mountains immediately and fall down as rain, with no time to pick up pollutants. What pollutants might be there get strained off by heavy jungle that surrounds the catchment before hitting our reservoirs — where it is practically pure. Then, unlike NYC, it does go thru filter stations, but this is for turbidity not purity...

NYC’s water may be as clean as that — I dunno. But it is highly unlikely to be cleaner than that.

I hope I’ve clarified my point: pissing matches about civic stuff serve no purpose, really.
