The fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has defended the fur industry saying it is justified because the "beasts" fur comes from would "kill us if they could."
The Chanel supremo said it was "childish" to even discuss the issue of wearing fur in a world where eating meat was normal.
German-born Lagerfeld, 75, a contemporary of the late Yves Saint Laurent, said that he did not himself wear fur. But he defended the practice, saying there was "an industry who lives from that".
Hunters in the north "make a living having learnt nothing else than hunting", he said, "killing those beasts who would kill us if they could."
Animals should be killed "nicely" if at all possible, said Lagerfeld, who admitted to being queasy about eating meat.
"I can hardly eat meat because it has to look like something what it was not when it was alive," he said.
He concluded: "In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish."

Well, his clientele is mostly made up of such ninnies. He has no choice but to put up with them. If you look at PETA protesters on TV, many of them look like fashion-loving airheads.
Bravo to Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, for sticking it to the Tree Huggers and PETA people.
Fashion is one of France’s leading industries and exports, and Lagerfeld’s Chanel leads the pack.
Growing up in NYC I remember hearing about a thriving fur industry that supported thousands of working people, gave them jobs, the opportunity to earn a good living, and send their kids to college. Then along came the PETA people, and the Fur Industry died. PETA cares nothing for human beings; the families left jobless, artisans and craftsmen having their livelihood snatched away from them, or the industrie’s manufacturing base in the center of NYC destroyed.
Kudos to The Kaiser!
ROOTFL My cat agrees! Here is an idea, let the ladies go out and trap the critters, skin them, tan the hides and make the coats, etc. That is really going back to nature!!!
Actually, I have nothing against folks wearing fur, leather, etc.. I just couldn't resist a comment on this stupid defense. Using leather and fur is like killing cows for their flesh. I'm all for it.
I once heard about some militant peta people who thew paint on some ladies furs and then arrogantly bragged about it. The fellow interviewing them asked why not go throw paint on the local biker’s gangs leather jackets. Silence........
Why would breasts want to kill us ?
thew?

MMmmmm...fur....( insert Homer Simpson here )drool....
I think animal fur is just beautiful. I’m with Karl.
In creating garments of fur, we are giving the animals a sort of immortality. Consider how long a well maintained fur piece will last, as compared to the lifespan of the animal that it is made from.
Killer mink bump!
KL makes fashion sense and common sense.
Karl Lagerfeld is a fashion and marketing genius.
He took a lifeless company, with only a name and past glory, Chanel, and turned it into a powerhouse of an industry, and the most successful fashion house in the world. He invigorated the French fashion industry, which is a major economic engine in France, and gave jobs to thousands of people.
One of the benefits of the economic downturn is some of those airheads will lose their trust funds and *gasp* they may even have to get a real job instead of protesting.
I keep telling my wife...we love all animals. You don’t want to wear a dead animal right? However, she wants a fur coat...the economy is bad so I’m safe for a while. But one of these days...maybe deflation will bring the price down. One can only hope.
