Secondaries are always very satisfying.
A guy I was in the AF Reserve with had a great "Secondaries" story: He was flying an F-4 somewhere over the soutern end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, working with a slow FAC. (Forward Air Controller in a propeller aircraft) It was nighttime, and no one could really see much of anything, in those mostly pre-FLIR days. The FAC dropped a "log", a burning marker, and used that as a reference to tell the Phantom drivers where to drop, with the target being a suspected truck park under some trees, where the FAC thought he saw something.
My buddy rolled in for a dive-toss delivery, but had a hung bomb, which finally fell loose somewhat later than it should have, and of course went flying off into the deep dark. The FAC saw the explosion miles away from the desired impact point and thought it was some other team working the area. My buddy owned up to his hung bomb, and then the secondaries started. Lots and lots of secondaries. The FAC called in the clans and they bombed the hidden ammo dump for a couple of days. :)
Good story. Glad it worked out. Wouldn’t want to waste a good bomb.
