WASHINGTON - Rep. Bobby Rush says he doesn't think any U.S. senator would be caught turning a black man away from serving alongside them. He thought wrong.
No Senate Democrats responded to his racial challenge. And they got support from President-elect Barack Obama, who will be the first African-American in the White House.

Then Rush stepped up to the microphone to offer his challenge.
"Let me just remind you that there presently is no African-American in the U.S. Senate," he began.
"I will ask you to not hang and lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer," he added. "I don't think that anyone _ any U.S. senator who's sitting in the Senate right now _ wants to go on record to deny one African-American for being seated in the U.S. Senate."

Now that America has elected a black President, black rage has been assuaged and we can all finally get beyond race.

One thing I've NOT seen, other than Bobby Rush's remarks right after the appointment speech, where is the expressed black outrage that the Senate might not possibly seat Burris? I'd sure love to see a website or two on the subject.

Rush is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, as well as a former member and founder of the Illinois Black Panther.
Back in 2000, Obama challenged Bobby Rush in the Dem primary the IL-01 seat. Obama’s message was blacks and whites must come together to promote socialism. Rush’s message was Obama is the “white” candidate” and derided him for lacking “street creed” for being raised by whites. Rush defeated Obama by the black vote alone. Flash forward 8 years later. Those same Chicago blacks who thought Obama was an “oreo”, now worship him as a god. Go figure.
They got their “black” president now. Now they can be as openly racist as they want to.
Gotta hand it to Blago, he may be crude, but he’s a crude political genius. He is going shift this whole discussion away from him and into a racial controversy. Not to mention currying favor with the half of the population that will be part of the jury pool. Very very shrewed.
