Caroline Kennedy repeats 'you know' 142 times in interview
The Telegraph ^ | 29 Dec 2008 | Toby Harnden

Posted on 12/29/2008 6:07:25 PM PST by nickcarraway

When she first made it known that she wanted to be appointed to take over Mrs Clinton's seat, Miss Kennedy, 51, the daughter of the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, seemed a near certainty for the job.

But in the course of a few weeks she has alienated Governor David Paterson of New York, who has the sole power to make the appointment, and the American press, including the elite New York Times, which is a powerful influence on Democratic officials.

During an interview with the paper she stumbled badly, fuelling comparisons to Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, whose bid for the vice-presidency was blighted by a series of disastrous interview with Katie Couric of CBS News.

Perhaps most damaging of all was her repeated use of the phrase "you know", which she uttered 142 times and was left in the transcript when it appeared in print.

Explaining why she would be a good Senator, she said: "So I think in many ways, you know, we want to have all kinds of different voices, you know, representing us, and I think what I bring to it is, you know, my experience as a mother, as a woman, as a lawyer, you know, I've been an education activist for the last six years here, and, you know, I've written seven books – two on the Constitution, two on American politics.

"So obviously, you know, we have different strengths and weaknesses."

Now Miss Kennedy, who has never held an elected office and often neglected even to vote, is in danger of emulating her cousin Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, daughter of Robert Kennedy, who was shot dead in 1968 while he was a Senator for New York.

And, how devastating to finally comprehend that my teachers in school were so very wrong!

They taught me, eons ago, that Senators were supposed to be Orators.

Like, who knew, you know, they were like, totally clueless?

In between “joolery” commercials?

I get exhausted after just a few minutes of Hannity. Logorrhea is, I think, the word. He thinks he MUST be making sounds AT ALL TIMES. That’s why people say “y’know”: they cannot tolerate just pausing to think. The silence terrifies them. With Hannity it’s “y’know” and also the constant repetition of rote phrases. He can’t mention Jeremiah Wright without rattling off “God-damn-America-9/11-was-our-fault-chickens-come-home-to-roost,” etc. He can’t mention anybody without reeling off a similar collection of stock phrases. It’s as though he is determined, in any given hour of his program, to articulate every thought Sean Hannity has ever had.

Isn’t it fortunate that she didn’t go to some far inferior school like, you know, Idaho for instance! She might not have a cogent thought if not for that Ivy League education!

That sentence should be taken out and shot.

I heard one of her statements. It was hilarious. Something bland and pathetic about her.

Her uncle Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, who is stricken with brain cancer, is understood to have played the crucial role in persuading his niece to seek the seat, which would ensure the Kennedy legacy continues in the Senate.

Sure, cuz we wouldn't want the name 'Kennedy' to be stained with Ted and son Patrick's antics.

I can not prostrate my arthritic self at thy feet as adequately as thou so richly deserve, oh Mighty Masterly Slinger!!

Such a superlative performance demands golden accolades from all who read this brilliant master work.

Mark Twain, Bret Harte, and Ambrose Bierce in colaboration could not have done better.

Here's some audio:

The More You Know: Caroline Kennedy

"You know" thirty times in less than 2.5 minutes. And it doesn't count the "uh/um"s.

Kennedy Camelot (and, yes, it is spelled with a C)? I’d call it Kennedy Babylon. Ted Kennedy has the morals of a rattlesnake, as did his brothers. King Arthur had much better morals than those characters. So I wouldn’t compare the Kennedy White House to Camelot.

Why are they calling a 51-year-old, married woman “Miss”? Is it a British thing? Do they not use the abbreviation Ms. there?

They do. It stands for "Manuscript"

Caroline Kennedy repeats 'you know' 142 times in interview

That's half as many times as Sean Hannity does per hour on his radio show. You know.

It pains me to admit it, but even Hannity may be smarter than Ms Caroline.

So I wouldn’t compare the Kennedy White House to Camelot.

That's why I spelled it Kamelot. I was being sarcastic, poetic license, bitterly ironic, take your pick. I thought of another play on that word but don't want to cross the mods this morning.
