When she first made it known that she wanted to be appointed to take over Mrs Clinton's seat, Miss Kennedy, 51, the daughter of the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, seemed a near certainty for the job.
But in the course of a few weeks she has alienated Governor David Paterson of New York, who has the sole power to make the appointment, and the American press, including the elite New York Times, which is a powerful influence on Democratic officials.
During an interview with the paper she stumbled badly, fuelling comparisons to Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, whose bid for the vice-presidency was blighted by a series of disastrous interview with Katie Couric of CBS News.
Perhaps most damaging of all was her repeated use of the phrase "you know", which she uttered 142 times and was left in the transcript when it appeared in print.
Explaining why she would be a good Senator, she said: "So I think in many ways, you know, we want to have all kinds of different voices, you know, representing us, and I think what I bring to it is, you know, my experience as a mother, as a woman, as a lawyer, you know, I've been an education activist for the last six years here, and, you know, I've written seven books two on the Constitution, two on American politics.
"So obviously, you know, we have different strengths and weaknesses."
Now Miss Kennedy, who has never held an elected office and often neglected even to vote, is in danger of emulating her cousin Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, daughter of Robert Kennedy, who was shot dead in 1968 while he was a Senator for New York.

Whatever the blonde with the heavy eye makeup is being accused of, she is not guilty.
Whatever the weathered looking one with the bad teeth is being accused of, she is most definitely guilty.
And I don’t care what they are accused of. (For the record, I would rather have the blonde woman representing me. I could go and visit her Senate office at least once, ostensibly on official voter business, without being accused of stalking.)
My late Uncle Frank, a lifelong working class Boston Republican (there's a rare bird) said once at Thanksgiving dinner, "The only good Kennedy is a dead Kennedy."
We had some fun holidays in my family!
Sarah Palin could kick her @ss.
Dull public speaker. She comes off kinda flat.
Sarah Palin is an exciting public speaker. Definately not flat.
What about BO? If he can’t read something he’s ummmmm, ummmmm, ummmmmm,uuummmmmmm........
Qualified? Who cares? This one is NOT GUILTY!
Heh...Heh...
I just bet you did! : - D
not sure who Carolyn is but Caroline is you know, like you know silly.
It is love for us, the little people. For example, in exchange for the pittance the Kennedy Family receives on every bottle of Scotch whiskey, Ted samples every batch in an heroic effort to make sure that tainted Scotch does not reach our shores. Nasty work, but this selfless patriot doesn't mind! Noblesse oblige!
Do you appreciate the long nights JFK spent in counseling young women, even before he became President? RFK was no exception. Why he and his brother spent many hours helping Marylin Monroe in her effort to overcome dependency on prescription drugs! Or the young Dr. Smith, giving generously of his time to conduct gynecological examinations, at no charge.
Young Kennedy Klan members frequently run thorough quality control checks on herbal medications from the rain forests of Peru and Colombia and stay busy at other times testing recreational vehicles and automobiles to the breaking point ... all to make sure that the peasants who came here after Uncle Ted's excellent Immigration Reform Act of 1965, lead safer lives.
Doubt the love the Kennedys have for you, and me, and all the other little people? Think of young Senator Ted, diving into cold murky waters repeatedly in his heroic rescue attempt at Chappaquiddick, trying to rescue a young woman, a stranger to him, who had stolen his car to go joy-riding over a dangerous bridge (built by Republicans).
Selfless service! Another young Kennedy drove a young woman from a poor family living in substandard housing to high priced motels and payed her top dollar for babysitting, all in an effort to stimulate the local economy. This young fellow tragically lost his life in service to humanity, aggressively checking the environmental damage done to a tree by successive Republican administrations.
When The Roman Catholic Church elects a pro-choice pontiff, I fully expect many members of America's Royal Family to be canonized. I sincerely doubt that this would make a difference to you ungrateful wretches, but rest assured, the Kennedys will still love you, and all the other little people.
I know two of them and I get them mixed up all the time.
Caroline Schlossberg and Carolyn Kennedy.
Pardon me for getting their names mixed up. ; )
Or is it Carolyn Kennedy and Caroline Schlossberg?
I give up!
That unusual....she is not from Minnesota.
The NYT did her no favors by publishing the transcript "as is." You can read it here.
LMAO@ this thread.
It’s really funny, you know?
As a matter of fact, the other night my wife was watching a series on the White House in which a tour with Jacqueline Kennedy was repeated.
It struck me that Jackie sounded a lot like Marilyn Monroe.
You’re absolutely correct, but not quite as studied. Marilyn did Marilyn much better than Jackie did Marilyn.
But then again, you cant fix vacuous.
Or vapid.
