A STORM has damaged the Lone Pine Tree planted in the grounds of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
The Aleppo pine was planted by the Duke of Gloucester in 1934 and commemorates the Australian soldiers killed in the capture of the Lone Pine ridge at Gallipoli on August 6, 1915.
An Australian soldier who took part in the attack, in which his brother was among more than 2000 killed, found a cone on one of the branches used by the Turks as overhead cover for their trenches.
He sent it to his mother, who raised the tree from seed shed by the cone, which she presented to be planted in the memorial grounds in honour of her own and others' sons who fell at Lone Pine.
Australian War Memorial acting assistant director of corporate services Sharmaine Lock said a tree surgeon would be called in on Monday to inspect the tree.
"This tree symbolises what it means to be Australian," she said.

A memorial tree that WASN’T vandalized??
Unfortunately, it’s not unheard of for War Memorials to be vandalised in Australia - but it is rare. Even the smallest village normally has a memorial and most are treated with the respect they deserve.
Amen!
Yes mate and anyone who was found by a local doing such a thing would get a lesson in bad behavior and it’s consequences!

Fearsome Warriors, Dangerous Enemies and Bloody Good Mates.
(if only they could play The Rugby League they’d be dam’n near perfect!)
I hope they catch the scroat that damaged the Pine and turn him over to the RSL for punishment detail. Field Punishment #2 should do the trick nicely.
