Sen. Reid Hits the Ground Running in Uphill Re-Election Bid
Wall Street Journal Online ^ | 12/26/08 | T.W. Farnam

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid will command the biggest party majority of any Senate leader in a quarter century when the new Congress convenes in January. But the Nevada Democrat is already worried about his own re-election fight in 2010.

Sen. Reid, perhaps the most-vulnerable Democrat who will face re-election in a midterm race that is likely to favor his party once again, began interviewing campaign managers last week. The Senate majority leader also recently stepped up fund-raising.

Starting early could help Sen. Reid avoid the fate of his predecessor, Tom Daschle, who was Democratic leader for a decade before losing his re-election bid in South Dakota in 2004. The current Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, narrowly won re-election in Kentucky this year.

Sen. Reid "saw what happened to Tom Daschle and Mitch McConnell," said Republican Sen. John Ensign, Nevada's the other senator. "He saw the consequences of being the majority leader or the leader of one of the parties."

...

Democrats have picked up a combined 13 seats in the past two election cycles. In 2010, more Republicans than Democrats are up for re-election, and Democratic incumbents appear to be well-positioned overall.

Sen. Reid, however, faces a potentially tough fight. A recent Research 2000 poll of likely voters put his approval rating at 38% and his disapproval rating at 54%, a possible reflection of voters' displeasure with gridlock and partisanship in Washington. ...

"Republicans are going after Harry Reid's Senate seat in 2010, and we can't afford to lose a great Democratic leader," Senator-elect Merkley wrote in his email.

His complete jackass statements on the Floor about his partnership with Rush to sell that stupid clear-channel letter should be enough. The man is a lying bufoon!

As well he should be. People will have come to know what these scum are all about.

Why do these dimwits always look like dried up prunes and about to puke all the time. Ugh!

What? Does Dingy Harry have Alzheimers to go along with his single digit IQ? Then inject a GPS tracker under the skin of the turd.

Don’t be so sure that the next midterm elections will favor Democrats. Being in power now may turn out to be a curse they won’t squirm out of.

‘If a decent challenger arises, I will donate what I can to the campaign to get rid of worthless Harry Reid.’

Ditto. Would love to see this hateful little weasel dumped.

John Ensign nearly sent Reid packing in 1998, but Reid squeaked out a win of a little over 400 votes. (Ensign went on to win the other senate seat in 2000) Reid never won big to my memory except for 2004 when he had no strong opposition.

The votes that put Dingy Harry over the top in ‘98 were FRaudulent.

The Republican Party did not support then Rep. Ensign for what should have been a “no-brainer” recount challenge, and consequently, Reid wa allowed to steal the election and was seated.

The Republican Party, shamefully, has a nasty habit of not supporting their own in marginal elections — cf B-1 Bob Dornan, Senator Mary Landrieu and Governor Whatsherface in Washington state.

Hope they do a better job in Minnesota for Norm Coleman!

One wonders when the Republican Party will come to understand that the Democrats are not playing chess — they are playing shootout at the OK corral!

Politics is a kill or be killed contest, and the Republicans have not figured that out.

Harry reminds me of a small town undertaker.

He could very easily have been the inspiration for same in the "Tumbleweeds" comic strip.

I read on a Nevada blog just the other day, he bought property on either side of the new Hoover Dam bridge, before everyone knew about it being approved/funded and made a killing on it... he has done this all over Clark County... the people should send him packing; and what was he doing in the Caribbean raising money for his senatorial run?

I nearly went in the front yard to shoot a bunch of guns in to the air to celebrate when tommy dashole got defeated.
If this complete ass Reid went down to defeat I would definately celebrate in some appropriate fashion.

Mark Levin has stated many times on his radio show that he will actively campaign for whomever runs against Senator Reid.

I wouldn’t want Dr. Levin working against me!

YIKES!!!

When the gungrabbers try reinflicting the Assault Weapon Ban again, Harry may well find that he doesn’t have the 473 vote margin that saved him from getting dumped into the bilges of history this time, if he does the Kamikaze manouver and votes with the Brady Bunch.

A whole bunch of the Democrats agenda isn’t popular here. The Republicans lost the state last election because of the economy, but that doesn’t mean that everybody has suddenly lost their minds and turned into Pelosi clones. In fact, a lot of the people who increased the population here are folks who are here because of the collectivst crap that goes on in California.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what Harry thinks is more important— the Democratic agenda or his job. And if it’s the former, it’s gonna be really interesting to see how he gets out from under it. In the meantime, somebody could always resurrect D-Foley-8 and apply it to the next election.

And lack of strong opposition seems to be the case in 2010. Mores the pity.
