You just reminded me of the local Sheriffs SWAP program. The Sheriff has a wood lot where utilities dump their logs and the Jail brings inmates there to cut and and split them then volunteers distributes it to the “needy”

The inmates get points toward their probation. Mostly DUI convictions. The wood tends to be Monterey Pine, a trash wood that leaves a lot of ash...
