Civilization, for its perpetuation, requires the recognition of the dignity of each individual. This requires that the societies that comprise civilization formulate means by which the interaction of individuals is regulated in a fair and consistent manner. This has been a nearly intractable problem due to the natural tendency of man to seek dominion over other men.
More accurately, the natural tendency of government to seek total control over its citizens, and to expand the amount of persons it directly controls. Thus why John Adams, among others, advocated a government of laws and not of men.

I sincerely hope Bertrand eventually recanted his humanistic predilictions before he became mere worm food.
Sadly, I fear he feared being ridiculed by his fellow cognoscenti more than he feared being seperated - ad infinitum - from his heavenly Father and Creator.
