The reason preschool in the U.S. is a "patchwork quilt" or "nonsystem" is that kids have different needs and their parents have varying attitudes toward preschool (which is often primarily daycare). Some 3-year-olds may thrive in preschool, but other 3yo should be at home. Some mothers work full time, but many others work part time or stay at home because they want to care for and educate their children themselves. Taxpayer-funded "free" preschool will do nothing for families that want to keep their young children at home. (Of course, SAHMs *do* take their kids to libraries, playgrounds, etc.) Liberals think the raising of young children should be managed by the government.

The article mentions a woman whose two kids attend an $18K per year preschool funded by the government and foundations. Gold-plated preschools for poor children will cause other parents, especially mothers, to wonder if they are suckers for working.

“It’s a patchwork quilt, a tossed salad, a nonsystem,” said Libby Doggett, executive director of Pre-K Now

And thank God for that. Parents have a choice of many different types of preschools or none at all. The worst possible thing I can imagine is a "system" of one-size-fits-all government run indoctrination centers that would soon become compulsory.

Is this the advent of the Government Cooer program? I’ve been expecting it for years as more and more is learned about the importance of the earliest days and weeks of a child’s life. Just imagine, vast armies of government cooers going door-to-door to coo at babies identified as receiving insufficient cooing from their parent(s). Maybe it can be called the Equal Cooing Act of 2009.

This is where we’re headed, and it looks like we’re almost there.

Did you catch the mentioning toward the end of the article that one of the most frequently cited studies promoting pre-kindergarten care involved a whopping 24 children and is more than 40 years old?

These aren't the children who need taxpayer-funded preschool.

The children who need it are those whose parents never read to them, never talk to them, perhaps regard them merely as additions to the welfare check, and are too busy with social life and drugs to pay much attention to the babies period.

Well run childrens' homes might be a better idea.

They want you kids earlier it seems. Head start has done crap if it was “needed” from 1965 to now. I’d tell Obama where to stick it.

[T]he $10 billion Mr. Obama has pledged for early childhood education would amount to the largest new federal initiative for young children since Head Start began in 1965. Now, Head Start is a $7 billion federal program serving about 900,000 preschoolers.

Marxists want to indoctrinate children as early an age as possible, so they are prepared to take their place in the new system. Why should the biological parents have to teach their children when the government can do it better?

Save the money. Let private enterprise take care of early childhood education.

The kids can start in kindergarten.
