Obama Pledge Stirs Hope in Early Education
New York Times ^ | December 16, 2008 | Sam Dillon

[T]he $10 billion Mr. Obama has pledged for early childhood education would amount to the largest new federal initiative for young children since Head Start began in 1965. Now, Head Start is a $7 billion federal program serving about 900,000 preschoolers.

“People are absolutely ecstatic,” said Cornelia Grumman, executive director of the First Five Years Fund, an advocacy group. “Some people seem to think the Great Society is upon us again.”

...

Now that new initiatives seem likely, experts are debating how best to improve America’s early childhood system, which they call fantastically fragmented, unconscionably underfinanced and bureaucratically bewildering. Some hesitate to use the word “system” at all.

“It’s a patchwork quilt, a tossed salad, a nonsystem,” said Libby Doggett, executive director of Pre-K Now, a group that presses for universal, publicly financed prekindergarten.

There are federal and state, public and private, for-profit and nonprofit programs. Some unfold in public school classrooms, others in storefront day care centers, churches or Y.M.C.A.’s, and still others in tiny centers run out of private homes.

“California has 22 different funding streams for child care and preschool, and that mirrors the crazy labyrinth of funding sources coming out of Washington,” said Bruce Fuller, an education professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who is the author of “Standardized Childhood: The Political and Cultural Struggle Over Early Education.”

.....and into the states care is that it is easier to indoctrinate them to the socialist mentality the younger they start.

Head start, Breakfast For Kids at school, No Child Left Behind are all nothing more than another step on the march toward collectiveism.

Big government advocates and other socialists know that children raised in these environments are more attuned to the state collective providing for them and less familiar with traditions of independance, self reliance and merit.

Its like McDonalds - catch them early and they’re yours for life.

The proof is the millions of mindless followers of Obama who fell for his promises of more and more “wealth redistribution.”

They want the government to be their mommy and daddy - even when they are well into what used to pass for adulthood.

There have been no long term study that can show a real difference between children who have attended Head Start and children who do not attend Head start. There are some real difference in the first years but then the differences disappear after around fifth grade.

"Liberals think the raising of young children should be managed by the government."

How, otherwise, would liberalism be able to construct a proletariat which is a government managed guaranteed voting bloc. And, what better way is there to guarantee that bloc's continuing renewal than to continually infuse young minds with liberal doctrine. Originality of thought does not (and can not) exist in such a body of people and, because of that lack of originality, the nation will be enfeebled.

“Conservatives have lost the battle because we allow and fund these programs.”

the problem is they want public schools...as long as they are run by conservatives. They are useful idiots because they keep the entire system in place.

It’s not really “early education” .. it’s early progarmming on how ugly and bad America is .. and how the govt owes you everything.

More dumbing down of our young people .. more dumbing down about the true values of life, liberty and freedom.

These people know what they are doing.....

.....Take away the family bond and influence immediately and for the first 5 years and you have a good little Kommunist in the future.

Worthless Waste?

I don’t think so. The state gets its money’s worth, you can believe it.

In its relentless war against human society, the state rarely puts a foot wrong.

And thank God for that. Parents have a choice of many different types of preschools or none at all. The worst possible thing I can imagine is a "system" of one-size-fits-all government run indoctrination centers that would soon become compulsory.

It will do just what they want it to do, it will turn them all into little liberals who look to the almighty government to tell them how to think and live.

Is this the advent of the Government Cooer program? I’ve been expecting it for years as more and more is learned about the importance of the earliest days and weeks of a child’s life. Just imagine, vast armies of government cooers going door-to-door to coo at babies identified as receiving insufficient cooing from their parent(s). Maybe it can be called the Equal Cooing Act of 2009.

This is where we’re headed, and it looks like we’re almost there.

That sort of education should be our goal today. What is our goal for which we are spending billions at the Federal level?

Did you catch the mentioning toward the end of the article that one of the most frequently cited studies promoting pre-kindergarten care involved a whopping 24 children and is more than 40 years old?
