But considering that the earlier two ships had just been SLEP'd and given 15 additional years of life, would it really have made sense to SLEP America given that there was an extraneous deck in the fleet? Given the desire for a constant number of decks to support 11+1, if America had been SLEP'd the USN would either have had to retire one of the previous SLEPs early before the SLEP investment had been fully depreciated, or would have had to slip construction of one of the new decks ... messing up the replacement schedule and possibly jeopardizing the NNSB industrial base. For age reasons I'd go with keeping the newer one even at the price of S.L.E.P. Indy would have probably been the likely choice to take out upon completion. Put Indy in Fleet Reserve Active. We had not been running on a true +1 since the late 1980's. They were trying to use JFK for that. INDY came back to fleet from SLEP in 1988. She went 10 more years before taken out of service. It didn't even make 15.

Yep, that ship worked with our battle groups in the 80’s to pre-position supplies that went on to the combat support ships...
But I still think it would have been neat to see a combat ship named after him, at least one, for a period of time...

maybe look like a ‘72 pontiac bonneville with fake white sidewalls, curb feelers, continental kit.Not running, of course, set up on cement blocks in the White House yard........

Me too. They should have continued the traditional naming conventions...not naming frikking Carriers for POLITICIANS!
George Washington I could see, hell, he’s on Rushmore, but...Vinson?
That makes me gag. (nothing against Vinson, but you know what I mean.)

I respect your opinion but I think in this case we should make an exception.I think it would be bad luck to have obama have anything to do with this commissioning. He is no supporter of our military whatsoever.

Zero will probably demand copies of every classified document relating to the Bush be on his desk by 4PM, JAN20 and by 8AM the next morning those docs will be in Moscow,
Beijing, Tehran, Pyongyang, Damascus and Timbuktu.
