The problem with that argument is that Russia does not have anything which the US wants or needs

I think there are things the USA would use force for: like making Russia allow foreign companies use its tube-transport facilities to Western Europe to deliver gas/oil.

"You either allow them transport their oil at $0.01 per 100 miles or be bombed into oblivion".

Meanwhile, Russia is turning into a failed state, with lots of incentives to loot her neighbors, or in threatening them into giving tribute.

I can't see what makes you think so since all the countries surrounding Russia are either poorer or NATO members which are hard to loot.

More likely scenario is Russia finding a reason to invade any country (eg, Georgia) that offered a pipeline that would compete with Russia's pipeline, and threaten Russia's position in supplying natural gas and oil to Europe.

Georgia's pipeline, which linked the Caspian oil fields to the Black Sea and Turkey, were the likely real targets of the Georgia war.
