My explanation of that would be this; The dems don't care about the morals or reputation of their candidate so any democrat candidate will be voted FOR.
We conservatives are more discriminating and ‘nitpicking’ as you mentioned. There is never a perfect candidate. The pubs were really fractured during this election.
McCain was wimpy too, he didn't fight.

Now they have lost Congress and the White House
Those that did not vote to get a Republican in the WH have nothing to cry about now
All that said or thought “this will teach ‘em!” and “In 4 years the voters will revolt and toss out the left!” are light in gray matter
They elected a Commie and got the Clintons back in high positions again too!
