"...so it would not run afoul of the ban on gays serving in the military"

There is no such ban on gays in the military unless Obama put the policy in place as commander of his shadow government.

There have always been gays in the military..my guess is that there always will be. Going back into the mists of time! I spent 8 years in the RAF starting back in 1945...at one time I was part of a crew flying Shackletons out of Luqa Malta...the first trip I was told by the skipper that we would be landing in El Adem which is way out in the boonies of the Sahara desert between Tripoli and Benina.

He told the crew that we should get off the aircraft while it was being refuelled and go straight to the mess tent...and after we had eaten to get right back on the Shack. We thought this was a mite strange but we soon changed our minds when we saw the lines of weird people along the runway as we entered finals.

Everyone on the camp had turned out to see us disambark...I learned later that El Adem was a camp to which the RAF sent anyone with a bent tendency to serve their time. The whole camp including the CO were homosexuals! The RAF hid homosexuals away in remote camps like this Aden was another one and it seemed to work..in 8 years I never met another gay while serving in the forces.

We had 2 strange people on the Shack with us who were staying at El Adem whilst we were flying on to El Fayid...I have never been so glad to take off from any runway before or since. As we walked to the mess with our gear we had to pass between groups of station staff..(it was here that I got a good idea of how women must feel sometimes when they are being ogled by us men..I cut my ogling down a lot after this experience.)

This was a time when 2 years National Conscription was the law in the UK..so anyone who could breathe was put into a uniform...I should just mention that although I was 20yrs old and always hungry I couldn’t bring myself to eat in El Adem...I don’t know why!!!
