Gay man backed for Navy secretary

Some top retired military leaders and some Democrats in Congress are backing William White, chief operating officer of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, to be the next secretary of the Navy - a move that would put the first openly gay person at the top of one of the services.

The secretary's job is a civilian position, so it would not run afoul of the ban on gays serving in the military, but it would renew focus on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office.

"He would be phenomenal," said retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001, pointing to Mr. White's extensive background as a fundraiser for veterans' and military causes.

Retired members of the Joint Chiefs have contacted Mr. Obama's transition team to urge them to pick Mr. White, and members of Congress said he would be a good choice for a service secretary.

"He's very capable," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat, whose district includes the Intrepid Museum, a retired aircraft carrier berthed on the Hudson River in New York City.

Mr. Nadler said Mr. White has become a friend of the military, and particularly the service members and their families, both through the Intrepid and through Fisher Houses, which offer a place to stay so families can be close to military members who are receiving medical care.

A spokeswoman for the Obama campaign said they won't comment on personnel decisions.

You could say that to a real Marine’s face, but unless you have a death wish I wouldn’t recommend it.

“Homosexuals do not belong in the military at all, what to speak of positions of authority, in the public eye as well.”

Why?

BTW: All of those who would said that sitting out the election was better than voting for McCain will receive their just do.

The timeframe indicates this was one of "Clinton's generals". Scumbags like him and Wesley Clark give our flag officers a bad name.

I've got a better idea....how about he offers the job to John McCain. At least we'd get someone who understands the role of the Navy, and as a plus, we'd get him out of the Senate.

When I was a lad I served a term
As an office boy in an attorney’s firm
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor
and I polished up the handle of the big front door
I polished up that handle so carefully
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

There have always been gays in the military..my guess is that there always will be. Going back into the mists of time! I spent 8 years in the RAF starting back in 1945...at one time I was part of a crew flying Shackletons out of Luqa Malta...the first trip I was told by the skipper that we would be landing in El Adem which is way out in the boonies of the Sahara desert between Tripoli and Benina.

He told the crew that we should get off the aircraft while it was being refuelled and go straight to the mess tent...and after we had eaten to get right back on the Shack. We thought this was a mite strange but we soon changed our minds when we saw the lines of weird people along the runway as we entered finals.

Everyone on the camp had turned out to see us disambark...I learned later that El Adem was a camp to which the RAF sent anyone with a bent tendency to serve their time. The whole camp including the CO were homosexuals! The RAF hid homosexuals away in remote camps like this Aden was another one and it seemed to work..in 8 years I never met another gay while serving in the forces.

We had 2 strange people on the Shack with us who were staying at El Adem whilst we were flying on to El Fayid...I have never been so glad to take off from any runway before or since. As we walked to the mess with our gear we had to pass between groups of station staff..(it was here that I got a good idea of how women must feel sometimes when they are being ogled by us men..I cut my ogling down a lot after this experience.)

This was a time when 2 years National Conscription was the law in the UK..so anyone who could breathe was put into a uniform...I should just mention that although I was 20yrs old and always hungry I couldn’t bring myself to eat in El Adem...I don’t know why!!!

The emigrant and his gang can not even wait for him to be sworn in to office, before they start their destruction plans.

AMEN COB

Also the fat boy from NY endorsing him sets me over the top.

Ah for the good old days of the crooks and do funnies ‘falling up a ladder’ on the way to a blanket party.
Especially when the CO and XO at mast would smile at you knowingly while telling the ‘perp’ to be more careful and watch his actions in the future....
It may have been crude, but it sure was effective.....

William White may be a good choice, he could get The Village People to do recruiting in San Franfrisky...
